Satco S11268 — Starfish In-Wall Wi-Fi Dimmer Installation Guide

Installation guide for the Satco Starfish™ In-Wall Wi-Fi Dimmer (Model S11268) — a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi smart dimmer requiring no hub, rated for incandescent and dimmable LED bulbs/fixtures.

Ratings & Requirements

• 120VAC, 60Hz
• 450W incandescent, 150W LED
• A neutral wire is required for installation — this dimmer will not work without one
• Derating is required when installing in multi-gang applications
• This device does not work with smart lamps
• Dimming range varies by lamp type; dimmable LEDs may not dim as low as incandescent bulbs

Safety Warnings

• Shock hazard: Turn off the main power at the circuit breaker before installing. May result in serious injury or death — turn off power at the breaker/fuse and test that power is off before wiring.
• Fire hazard: For control of incandescent or LED luminaires only. Do not use with control receptacle outlets, fluorescent lighting fixtures, motor-operated appliances, or transformer-supplied appliances. Do not exceed electrical ratings.
• Use indoors only.
• Install in a metallic outlet box with minimum width 50mm, or a non-metallic box.
• Only use with solid copper wire or copper-clad wire.
• Before replacing light bulbs, make sure the dimmer is in the OFF position (no light level indicator lights lit), then turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse to ensure no power at the socket.
• An air gap switch can be used to disable the dimmer in single pole applications — this is not intended to replace turning off power at the circuit breaker or fuse.

How to Know if You Have a Neutral Wire

1. Turn power off at your breaker box and ensure the power is off.
2. Remove the wall plate and existing device from the wall box.
3. Remove and straighten all wires from the device.
4. If you see a white wire (or bundle of them), it's likely you have a neutral in that switch box.
5. If you do not have a neutral wire, this dimmer WILL NOT work. If the wiring looks different from what's described here, consult a certified electrician.

Identifying Line vs. Load Wiring

Determine which wire is "LINE" and which is "LOAD." Your old switch may have a screw terminal of a different color (usually black) — this is either the LINE or LOAD connection. Tag this wire with electrical tape. Disconnect all wires from the old switch, ensure no wires are touching, then turn the power back on at the circuit breaker. Use a handheld voltage tester on the tagged wire: if it's "live," it's the LINE wire/box; if not, it's the LOAD wire/box (and box, in 3-way applications).

Single Pole Wiring

Note: Ensure power is off before performing this step. Use #12-14 AWG solid copper or copper-clad wire, stripped to 2 cm (0.8 in). Insert wires into terminal holes and secure connections by tightening terminal screws to 16 lbf-in (1.8 N·m).

• LINE wire → terminal marked AC-L
• LOAD wire → terminal marked LOAD
• Neutral wire → terminal marked AC-N
• Ground wire → terminal marked GND

3-Way Wiring

A single pole or 3-way switch can be used alongside the smart dimmer. Important: the (existing) switch must be installed in the "LINE" wall box, and the smart dimmer must be installed in the "LOAD" wall box.

At the existing switch: LINE wire to one terminal, traveler wire to the other terminal, ground wire to the GND terminal.

At the smart dimmer: LINE wire to the AC-L terminal, LOAD wire to the LOAD terminal, traveler wire to the YL/RD terminal, neutral wire to the AC-N terminal, ground wire to the GND terminal.

Mounting & Testing

1. Push wires into the wall box and push the dimmer into the opening.
2. Mount the dimmer into the wall box and install the wall plate.
3. Turn power back on at the circuit breaker.
4. Test the device to ensure the lights turn on and off.

Operation is subject to two conditions: (1) this device may not cause interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation. This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, providing reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. If interference occurs, try reorienting/relocating the receiving antenna, increasing separation between equipment and receiver, connecting to an outlet on a different circuit, or consulting a dealer/technician for help.
