Installation guide and owner's manual for the PCS PulseWorx RFI-E Radio Frequency Interface (EnOcean), a battery-free plug-in RF-to-UPB bridge.

    Full text manual (for reference)

Installation guide and owner's manual for the PulseWorx RFI-E (Radio Frequency Interface – EnOcean), a plug-in interface that receives discreet RF codes from any EnOcean-enabled device and translates them into UPB signals on the existing powerline.

    Overview

The RFI-E is capable of responding to up to eight different EnOcean-enabled devices, including Decora-style rocker switches, split rocker switches, and handheld 4-button remotes. EnOcean is an RF communication and hardware standard that harvests kinetic energy to charge a built-in capacitor and broadcast the RF code — meaning no batteries, ever.

    Typical Uses

    • Adding a switch to any location where a powerline is not available
    • No need to add a J-Box or pull wire during installation
    • Handheld Key Fob control from inside or outside anywhere around the home
    • Adding wireless scene control to every room in the house

    Installation

    1. Locate an open outlet within 50' of the area where any EnOcean device will be deployed. Actual communication distance varies by environment (typically 50'–60' direct line of sight); walls, doors, and furniture can affect RF reliability. An extendable antenna on the bottom of the unit can increase distance/reliability.

    Setup Mode

    • Press the Program Button five times rapidly (no more than 0.75 second interval between presses, or it won't enter setup).
    • The Status LED blinks continuously Blue while in Setup mode.
    • Exit Setup mode by pressing the Program Button twice, or wait five minutes for it to time out.

    Configuring Remotes (up to 8)

    1. On the RFI-E: enter Learn mode by pressing and holding the push button until the Status LED blinks.
    2. Tap the push button the number of times corresponding to the remote number you want to assign (e.g., 3 taps for remote #3).
    3. The Status LED blinks red the selected remote number.
    4. On the RF Remote: single-tap one of the buttons so it transmits a signal to the RFI-E.
    5. If successfully learned, the RFI-E Status LED blinks magenta continuously.
    6. Repeat for additional remotes.
    7. Exit Learn mode by pressing and holding the push button until the Status LED stops blinking.
    8. Important: In UPStart, press Read Device so the Remote IDs are stored in the file. You can then modify the transmitted Link, button Mode, and actions for Single-Tap, Double-Tap, Hold, and Release.

    Operation, Test & Advanced Modes

    • The RFI-E accepts EnOcean commands from up to 8 independent remotes, each programmable to any UPB command, with customizable actions per single tap, double tap, press-and-hold, and release.
    • Test Mode (UPStart Communication tab): run a comtest from the PIM to the RFI-E — signal level, noise, and average noise. The Test tab's Receive Test window verifies button presses and logs the UPB commands transmitted.
    • Advanced (UPStart Advanced tab): adjust Receive Sensitivity — lower it in high-noise environments, or raise it if the RFI-E has trouble controlling distant UPB devices.

    Factory Default

To restore factory defaults, place the RFI-E in Setup mode and press the Program Button ten times rapidly. The Status LED blinks red to confirm; press the Program Button twice more to stop blinking. Default remotes:

    • Remote 1 = Hand-held Remote — Link 1 and Link 8
    • Remote 2 = Wall Switch Split-Rocker — Link 3 and Link 4
    • Remote 3 = Wall Switch Single Rocker — Link 1

PCS recommends using UPStart to program the device properly rather than relying on factory defaults.
