Installation guide and owner's manual for the PCS PulseWorx 8-Button Keypad Controllers, models KPCW8 (wall-mount) and KPCD8 (desktop) — UPB lighting scene controllers with backlit pushbuttons.

    Function

The 8-Button Keypad Controller (KPCx8) is a home automation controller that transmits UPB (Universal Powerline Bus) digital commands over existing power wiring to remotely turn on, off, and dim other UPB load control devices. No additional wiring is required and no radio frequency signals are used for communication.

    Wall-Mount vs. Desktop Styles

    • KPCW8: wall-mount version; installs in any wall box containing both line and neutral wires.
    • KPCD8: comes in an elegant desktop enclosure that can be located near any wall outlet.

    Engraved Pushbuttons

The KPCx8 has eight backlit pushbuttons engraved with the designations E, F, G, H, I, J, K, and L. An optional Custom Engraved Membrane kit (model CEM8) lets you tailor each button's label — contact your dealer or www.PulseWorx.com for ordering information.

    Important Safety Instructions

    • Do not use outdoors.
    • Do not use for other than its intended purpose.
    • Do not cover the product with any material while in use.
    • This product uses polarized plugs/sockets (one blade larger than the other) to reduce shock risk — if they don't fit, consult an electrician.
    • Save these instructions.

    Installation

The Keypad Controllers are for indoor use only. Simply plug the KPCD8 into any 120V power outlet.

To install the KPCW8 module in a wall box:

    1. Disconnect power to the wall box (remove the fuse or turn off the circuit breaker) before installing — installing while power is on may cause shock or damage the product.
    2. Remove any existing wall plate and device from the wall box.
    3. Use wire nuts to securely connect the KPCW8's white wire to the "Neutral" wire and the black wire to the "Line" wire.
    4. Fit the KPCW8 into the wall box, secure with mounting screws, and install the wall plate.
    5. Restore power at the circuit breaker.

    Configuration

Once installed, the KPCx8 can be configured either manually or with the UPStart Setup Software.

    • Manual configuration adds the device into a UPB network and links it to load control devices — refer to the Keypad Controller's Manual Configuration Guide on the PulseWorx website.
    • UPStart Setup Software (free, from PulseWorx.com) plus a Powerline Interface Module (PIM) unlocks the full set of configurable features and is highly recommended over the factory default configuration.

    SETUP Mode

To configure a UPB system, place the KPCx8 into SETUP mode by simultaneously pressing and holding the E and L buttons for 3 seconds — all LEDs blink once the device is in SETUP mode. To exit, repeat the same button combination, or wait five minutes for it to time out.

Changing a Scene's Preset Light Levels

    1. Press the pushbutton on the 8-Button Controller to activate the currently stored preset scene in the Wall Switch Dimmer(s).
    2. Use the local rocker switch on the WS1D to set the new desired preset light level.
    3. Rapidly tap the pushbutton on the 8-Button Controller five times quickly.
    4. The WS1D's lighting load flashes once to confirm the new preset level was stored.

    Operation

Once installed and configured, the KPCx8 operates using the stored configuration settings. Single-tap, double-tap, hold, or release the pushbuttons to transmit preset commands onto the powerline. Refer to the 8-Button Specification Document (downloadable at www.PulseWorx.com) for full keypad operation details.

    Backlit Pushbuttons

Each of the eight pushbuttons has a blue LED for back-lighting and to indicate active loads/scenes. By default, back-lighting is enabled, and a pressed button illuminates brighter than the others.

    Keypad Lockout Feature

Useful for parties or to guard against children playing with the lighting:

    • To lock: simultaneously press and hold the G, H, I, and J buttons for 3 seconds — all LEDs extinguish and future presses have no effect.
    • To unlock: simultaneously press and hold G, H, I, and J again for 3 seconds — the KPCx8 resets and responds to presses again.

    Factory Default Settings

To restore factory defaults: place the KPCx8 into SETUP mode, then simultaneously press and hold the F and K buttons for 3 seconds. The E and L indicators light up to confirm the reset.
