    Installation guide for the OEM Systems SE-80SWf — an 8" in-ceiling/in-wall frameless passive subwoofer.

    Overview

    The SE-80SWf is a passive speaker using a specially-designed shallow cone made from polypropylene with a linear long-throw motor for high efficiency and high output in a compact design that fits standard "2x4" wall construction. Being passive, it has no built-in amplifier — it must be driven from a dedicated amplifier or connected in parallel with a primary listening speaker via a passive crossover (not supplied). It ships with the same round and square micro-perforated grilles used on OEM Systems' frameless in-wall/ceiling speakers.

    Installation Procedure

    1. Determine subwoofer location and check for obstructions (wiring, plumbing, ducts).
    2. Mark and cut the hole for the subwoofer, using the provided plastic compass or cardboard template. Cut to the inside of the drawn circle.
    3. Check speaker fit — verify the subwoofer fits properly into the cut-out; remove after checking.
    4. Run wire, if not already run, before final installation.
    5. Prepare the cavity — optionally add fibrous acoustic material (fiberglass or similar non-flammable material) behind the speaker; use a fabric barrier like Insu-Flate® ISF-147 if loose/blown insulation is present. A rigid enclosure behind the speaker is optional but should be large enough not to degrade performance (enclosures under 0.75 cuft / 21 liters should be stuffed with acoustic insulation).
    6. Prepare wire for connection: strip back the jacket, expose ½" (13mm) of each conductor, and connect to the spring terminals on the back of the subwoofer (depress terminal, insert wire, release). Observe polarity — red is positive (+), black is negative (–). Out-of-phase wiring causes an apparent loss of bass response.
    7. Insert the subwoofer into the hole and tighten the four toggle clamps (shipped in "Home" position). Caution: do not over-tighten — excess torque can damage the toggle and prevent a secure seat. A snug fit is all that's needed; if using a drill with a clutch, use the lowest clutch setting that will turn the screw.
    8. Attach the grille and adjust system controls to optimize bass performance. To remove the grille, pull forward at the edge (a thin tool can help) — expect initial resistance from the powerful neodymium magnets.

    Speaker Placement

    The SE-80SWf is optimized for small to mid-size home theaters and distributed audio systems (~3000 cubic feet / 85m³ or less). Recommended quantities: two woofers for small home theaters, four for larger/louder applications; for distributed audio, one woofer may suffice for small rooms, two for mid-size rooms, four for higher volume.

    • Corner placement (within 36" of a corner): most efficient at energizing the room — the best general option.
    • ¼ room-width from corners: works well with symmetric parallel walls; less efficient than corners but more uniform bass across the room width. Best when Auto Room Calibration isn't used.
    • Central rectangular pattern (4 woofers, rectangular room): least efficient at energy transfer but most uniform bass within the seating area — good for mid-room, multi-row seating without Auto Room Calibration.
    • Avoid placing woofers adjacent to hallway/room openings, or sharing wall/confined ceiling space with another infinite-baffle speaker (two subwoofers may share a space; large attic spaces are fine due to large air volume).
    • Avoid mounting subwoofers immediately adjacent to in-ceiling lighting, to reduce unwanted vibration.
    • It's fine to place subwoofers behind furniture if there's >1" (25mm) clearance for the sub to radiate — but avoid large pieces like china cabinets that can trap the energy.

    Amplification

    The SE-80SWf performs well with amplifiers rated 50–150 Watts RMS at 4 ohms (this is a 4-ohm subwoofer — size amplifier power at 4 ohms, not 8, unless subs are wired in series). Though rated for 150W, sustained overdriving even at moderate power can cause damage — reduce volume if you hear distortion at high listening levels.

    A dedicated subwoofer amplifier (e.g. OEM Systems Model 500) is recommended. The SE-80SWf can also be driven by an ordinary stereo amplifier, but conventional stereo amps typically lack the subsonic filters built into dedicated subwoofer amps — extra care is needed to avoid overdriving with subsonic program material. Since the SE-80SWf is designed to operate down to 30Hz, a subsonic filter around 35Hz is recommended for best performance and output capability.

    Passive Connection ("Passive Sub-Sat")

    The subwoofer can be connected in parallel with the main listening speakers using a passive crossover — this requires two subwoofers (one per channel) and is recommended only for a qualified installer, as optimizing a passive sub-sat system requires more skill than an active system. In an active sub-sat system (used by virtually all home theater receivers), the subwoofer is driven by a separate amplifier independent from the main speakers.

    Crossover

    The crossover directs low frequencies to the subwoofer and higher frequencies to the main speakers. In an actively-driven home theater setup, the AV receiver handles this function. Recommended crossover frequency: 80Hz ±20Hz for most installations.

    Equalization

    Modern AV receivers' Auto Room Calibration systems can meaningfully improve bass quality within a limited seating area, but results vary by algorithm and setup expertise. If Auto Room Calibration makes the system sound worse, restore factory defaults and consult an expert — equalization cannot correct every location in the room simultaneously.

    Wiring

    • Use good-quality CL-2 or CL-3 rated audio cable, at least 16-gauge for runs over 50 feet (15m), meeting local codes.
    • Allow about 2½ feet (0.8m) of free cable at the speaker cut-out, with sufficient length at the amplifier end.
    • Avoid bundling speaker cable parallel to electrical cables for extended lengths to reduce hum/RF interference; never staple or nail through conductors.
    • Maintain correct polarity across all speakers — mismatched phasing degrades bass quality.
    • Wire multiple subwoofers with their own dedicated cable for maximum flexibility; series, parallel, or series/parallel wiring configurations are all supported (see manufacturer illustrations for wiring diagrams).

    Painting the Grilles

    Leave grilles in their plastic bags until ready to paint, to protect from dust/oil contamination. Use multiple light coats of spray paint only (no brush/roller); certain paints require thinning to avoid clogging the perforations. Do not remove the scrim cloth from the back of the grille before painting — it cannot be reapplied once removed. Protect the work area from overspray, apply light coats from multiple angles while moving around/turning the grille, and allow drying time between coats.
