    Installation and User Guide for the NuVo NV-WCPS Wireless Control Pad System — a handheld wireless remote for controlling NuVo Grand Concerto, Essentia E6G, and Renovia whole-home audio systems.

    Overview

    The Wireless Control Pad System gives untethered wireless control of a NuVo System. Choosing the zone to control and managing audio sources are as simple as the touch of a button; a multi-line OLED display shows clear feedback for the music listening experience.

    Quick Start Guide

    1. In the Configurator software, assign a zone to each Wireless Control Pad — use a zone not intended for wired speakers (e.g. Zones 17–20, or Zone 9+ in an 8-zone system). Check "Using NV-WCP Wireless Control Pad" on the System Settings tab and download the configuration. Requires E6G/I8G Configurator v2.52+ or Renovia Configurator v0.65+.
    2. Choose the Coordinator's location — ideally mounted vertically on a wall, away from metal surfaces, typically near the NuVo System and source equipment (or a central home location if needed). The CAT5 run to the EZ Port/Allport/NuVoNet connection can extend up to 150 feet.
    3. Plug the Coordinator into the NuVo System's EZ Port, Allport, or Renovia Source Hub NuVoNet connection via CAT5 (this also powers it). Set the rotary switch between 1 and 4. Press and hold SETUP until the green LED flashes rapidly (only needed for the initial install; skip when adding additional pads).
    4. Power on the Wireless Control Pad by connecting the battery. It will prompt to Enable or Disable the Zone button (if it doesn't, restore factory defaults — see Section V). Enable allows control of any zone; Disable ties the pad to a single zone.
    5. The pad displays "Searching for Coordinator."
    6. Once found, it displays "Press SETUP Button on coordinator…Then Press OK." Press SETUP on the Coordinator, then OK on the pad. A list of available zones appears — select the zone reserved for this pad.

    Your Wireless Control Pad System is now fully functional.

    Wireless Control Pad Features

    1. Selected Source: three-character abbreviation of the current source
    2. OLED Display: multi-line; shows album/artist/track for personal music or channel/frequency for broadcast; expands to eight lines in menu mode
    3. Progress Bar: shows play status and doubles as a volume level indicator
    4. Menu Button: access to music library and setup options
    5. Up/Down Arrows: scroll menus; control volume in normal play mode
    6. Power Button: turns the pad and associated zone on/off
    7. Time and Battery Display: current time (Grand Concerto/Renovia only) and battery charge level
    8. Zone Button: lists available listening zones; highlight and press OK to switch
    9. OK Button: confirms menu selections or scrolls through sources
    10. Forward/Back Arrows: track/tune up-down for NuVoNet sources; IR-programmable (with press-and-hold) for third-party sources via Configurator software
    11. Play/Pause Button: toggles NuVo Tuner bands or play/pause for NuVoNet personal music; also IR-programmable with press-and-hold for third-party sources

    I. Setting Up in the Configurator Software

    Grand Concerto and Essentia E6G Systems

    Assign each Wireless Control Pad (up to 5) to an unused zone in the software's Zones tab — a zone not intended for an in-wall Control Pad. In E6G mode, the Zones tab shows only the 14 zones available to Essentia, but zone addresses 15–20 (Grand Concerto's extra zones) can still be entered for the WCP without preventing the configuration from downloading to the E6G system. Also check "Using NV-WCP Wireless Control Pad" on the System Settings tab so future NuVo firmware updates also update the installed pad.

    Renovia Systems

    Use the separate Renovia Configurator software; assign each pad (up to 5) to an unused zone address in the Zones tab. There is no "Using NV-WCP" checkbox in the Renovia Configurator.

    II. Installing the Wireless Control Pad

    Coordinator Installation — Grand Concerto / Essentia E6G

    The Coordinator communicates with up to five Wireless Control Pads via a single CAT5 connection to a "Device" input on the EZ Port/Allport (or an available RJ45 port on the back if all Device inputs are used). The blue power LED lights once connected to NuVoNet, provided the NuVo amplifier is powered on. Do not use an external power supply with the Coordinator. CAT5 can extend up to 150 feet.

    Coordinator Installation — Renovia

    Connect via CAT5 to a "NuVoNet" input on the Renovia Source Hub. Same power/LED behavior and 150-foot CAT5 limit as above.

    Peripheral Address

    The Coordinator has a 5-position rotary switch for a Peripheral Device address (4 available per NuVo System). Default position 1 is typical unless another Peripheral Device (e.g. the NV-NNA NuVoNet Adapter) requires a distinct 1–4 setting. Position "R" is for repeater use. Only one Coordinator per installation; up to five Wireless Control Pads per Coordinator.

    III. Out of Box Setup of the Wireless Control Pad

    Zone Button Configuration

    On first power-on, the pad asks whether to Enable or Disable the Zone button. Enabled gives access to all active system zones (in the order configured in the NuVo Configurator); if the system wasn't configured via software, zones appear generically as "Zone 1," "Zone 2," etc. A roaming pad must be tied to a zone address without attached speakers — otherwise it will always control that speaker output. Disabled ties the pad permanently to one zone.

    Establishing Communication with the Coordinator

    The display reads "Searching for Coordinator…" then "Press SETUP Button on Coordinator, Then Press OK." Press SETUP on the Coordinator, then OK on the pad.

    Zone Address

    Once linked, the pad prompts for a Zone Address (separate from the roaming Zone button function). Already-used addresses appear grayed out. Grand Concerto supports 20 total zone addresses; Essentia E6G supports 14. Up to five Wireless Control Pads can be assigned per installation. It's best to name zones for WCP use directly in the Configurator software.

    Handling Lost Communication

    If the pad goes out of range, it displays "Communication Lost Trying to Reconnect…" then "Connecting…" once restored, before returning to the current source's metadata. While reconnecting, only the Power button remains functional.

    Recharging

    Charges when placed in the dock; a 3-bar indicator shows charge level. Continuous operation battery life is 10 hours; an internal motion sensor powers off the pad when unused, extending standby life to 50 hours.

    IV. Using the Coordinator/Repeater as a Repeater

    An additional NV-WCPR Coordinator/Repeater can extend wireless range as an intermediate signal repeater. Set its rotary switch to "R," then power it via the included USB supply (or NuVoNet).

    Initial Setup

    1. Plug in the Repeater near the Coordinator. The SETUP LED flashes slowly while searching.
    2. When the LED remains lit steadily, press SETUP on the Coordinator, then on the Repeater. The LED turns off once linked.

    Limit repeater use to necessary cases — each added repeater in a chain reduces data throughput; avoid more than two repeaters in a string. Best performance comes from a centrally located Coordinator with Repeaters communicating directly to it (a linear Coordinator→Repeater→Repeater→WCP chain performs worse, ~49%, than a hub-style Coordinator↔Repeater arrangement, ~70%).

    After establishing the initial link, move the Repeater to its permanent location and plug it in — the LED flashes for up to 20 seconds then turns off if successful. If it keeps flashing, move closer to the Coordinator.

    Link Status Indicator

    Press the Up and Down arrows simultaneously on the pad to view link diagnostics: a C or R indicates whether it's linked to a Coordinator or Repeater (a "?" means undetermined, will resolve on the next switch). LQI (Link Quality Index, 0–255, higher is better) measures the bit error rate of the current packet. RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication, roughly -100 to +127, lower/closer to -100 optimal) measures peak radio energy on the channel, which may include non-ZigBee interference (Wi-Fi, microwaves, etc.).

    V. Restore Factory Defaults

    Wireless Control Pad: hold the internal Reset button (accessible with a paperclip) and the Zone button simultaneously; release Reset while continuing to hold Zone until the display reads "Restoring Factory Defaults…" It then returns to the Zone Button Enabled/Disabled prompt.

    Coordinator or Repeater: press and hold SETUP until the LED flashes rapidly, then release — it flashes for 20 seconds and turns off automatically once reset.

    VI. Invalid Zone Address

    If a new pad is assigned the same zone address as a previously configured one (e.g. due to being out of range or a new system configuration), pressing OK prompts the user to select a new zone address.

    VII. Using the Wireless Control Pad

    Zone Button

    Displays available zones; highlight with Up/Down arrows and press OK to begin controlling that zone.

    Basic Source Control

    • Arrow Forward/Back: track/preset navigation for NuVoNet Music Port/M3 Audio Server (tap = skip, hold = fast forward/rewind); tune up/down for Tuners; IR-assignable (tap and hold, two functions) for third-party sources via Configurator software.
    • Arrow Up/Down: volume up/down during playback; menu navigation when the Menu is open.
    • Play/Pause: standard play/pause toggle for personal music sources (Music Port, NuVoDock for iPod, M3); cycles broadcast bands for Tuners; IR-assignable (tap and hold) for third-party sources.
    • Power: turns the associated zone off; press-and-hold turns all zones off simultaneously; IR power commands assignable for third-party components via Configurator software.

    VIII. Wireless Control Pad Menu Functions

    Pressing MENU opens an eight-line Main Menu: Favorites, Sources, Adv. Zone Control, and Setup.

    Favorites

    A global top-line list. Can include synced playlists from Windows Media Player (via M3 Audio Server) or iPod, plus Tuner station presets or IR Macro Presets (first twenty configured presets auto-populate here). Manage via the source's Options menu (M3 Options / Source Options / iPod Options) > Edit Favorites > Add to Favorites, selecting the desired playlist and pressing OK.

    Sources

    Quick access to the six defined system sources. Third-party sources can be custom-named in the Grand Concerto/Essentia Configurator; NuVoNet sources have predefined names unless customized.

    Advanced Zone Control

    Temporary zone settings that reset automatically when an All Off command is issued.

    • Party Mode: toggled with OK; turns on all configured zones in the system and makes the current pad the Host controller for the whole house.

    Troubleshooting

    Issue Solution
    Added a repeater but range hasn't improved The repeater must be within the Coordinator's transmission range; a slowly blinking green light means out of range — move it closer to the Coordinator.
    Home wasn't prewired for the Coordinator, forcing a bad location (e.g. basement) If CAT5 was run for wired control pads, split one of those runs with an RJ45 splitter: plug the home-run CAT5 into one side and the Coordinator into the other. Choose a high, central control pad location, and mount the Coordinator vertically (not flat).
    Coordinator is centrally placed but range is still limited Wireless interference from nearby devices (iPod docks, phone systems, wireless routers) can degrade performance — keep the Coordinator at least 6 feet from such devices.
    Using 2 repeaters but no convenient power outlets at the chosen locations Repeaters can be powered via a CAT5 cable connected to a NuVoNet port (power only — data is still wireless, so the repeater must still be within range of the Coordinator).
    Need to expand outdoor range — can the Coordinator/Repeater go outside? Not outdoor rated, but works well in an outdoor-rated plastic enclosure mounted to wood/siding exterior surfaces. Avoid mounting to brick or concrete, which can block the signal.

    Battery Safety Notice

    Per DOT (eCFR49) and IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations effective January 2009, the Lithium Ion Battery packaged with each NV-WCP requires special handling, packaging, and shipping procedures. Products reshipped exactly as received from NuVo remain compliant as long as Addendum-A accompanies the packing slip. If repackaged, a properly sized Lithium Battery Handling Label plus Addendum-A must be included. The battery should never be removed from its packaging and shipped separately — doing so may violate shipping regulations and could result in fines up to $50,000 for the shipper.
