User guide for the Broan-NuTone PurePower Series Central Vacuum Power Units — Models PP500, PP600, and PP650. Covers safety instructions, grounding, filter maintenance, service parts, and troubleshooting for residential central vacuum systems.

Important Safety Instructions

For residential use only. When using an electrical appliance, follow these precautions to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or injury:

• Do not use on wet surfaces or outdoors.
• Do not vacuum liquids or fine powders (such as drywall dust).
• Do not use to pick up flammable or combustible liquids such as gasoline, or use in areas where they may be present.
• Do not pick up anything that is burning or smoking, such as cigarettes, matches, or hot ashes.
• Do not allow the unit to be used as a toy — close attention is necessary when used by or near children.
• Keep hair, loose clothing, fingers, and all parts of the body away from openings and moving parts.
• Turn off all controls before unplugging. Use extra care when cleaning on stairs.
• Do not handle the plug or appliance with wet hands, or use with a damaged cord or plug.
• Connect to a properly grounded outlet only. This appliance is for use on a standard 120 VAC, dedicated 20-amp minimum branch circuit.
• Do not put any object into openings; do not use with any opening blocked.
• Ensure air flows freely and exhausts unobstructed from the top or side outlet.
• Do not use without filter(s) in place. Do not use to blow leaves or debris.
• Do not place any object on top of the unit; do not install the unit horizontally.
• Do not use the pail as a wash bucket or as a stool. Avoid picking up sharp objects.
• Wear safety glasses and gloves when installing, servicing, or cleaning the unit.
• We recommend the unit be inspected by a specialized technician once a year.

Grounding Instructions

This appliance must be grounded. If it should malfunction or break down, grounding provides a path of least resistance for electric current to reduce the risk of electric shock. The appliance is equipped with a cord having an equipment-grounding conductor and grounding plug, which must be plugged into an appropriate outlet properly installed and grounded in accordance with local codes.

This appliance is for use on a standard 120 VAC, minimum dedicated 20-amp branch circuit with a NEMA 5-15R receptacle. No adapter should be used with this power unit. Inlet leads are connected to the power unit's low voltage tabs using crimp connectors (included in the parts bag) and low voltage harness.

Operation

Open the inlet cover and insert the end of the hose into the inlet to turn on the vacuum. For non-switched hoses, inserting the hose automatically turns on the power unit; removing it shuts the unit off. Some hoses have switches to activate the power unit. Unless using the utility valve (PP650 only), keep the ON/OFF switch on the power unit in the OFF position. Avoid picking up very large or lengthy debris, as it may become lodged in the hose or tubing.

When to Change Bag or Empty Debris Pail

With a 6 U.S. gallon capacity, under normal conditions the bag/debris pail requires changing/emptying approximately twice a year. Reduced suction usually means the bag/pail is full. Even if not filled to capacity, if the bag seems tightly stretched when removing the debris pail, change it to prevent tearing.

Emptying the Debris Pail (PP600 and PP650 only)

Release both latches on the sides of the unit by pulling out then pushing up. Holding the pail by the latches, lower it from the unit, carry it to a trash receptacle, and dispose of the debris. Put the pail back in place.

Disposable Bag Replacement (Model 391)

Release both latches, remove the pail, then grasp the edges of the bag collar and pull down — the bag will slide off easily (do not pull on the bag itself). Unfold the new bag, grasp the collar where indicated, and insert it over the bag adapter, being careful not to tear it. Ensure the collar sits between the taper ring and bag stopper on the bag adapter.

Filter Maintenance

Sealed HEPA Permanent Filter (PP600 and PP650 only)

This filter protects the motor and stops small particles from escaping without needing replacement. It cleans itself by moving up when the unit starts and dropping down when turned off. Under normal use there's no need to maintain it, but it can be removed to inspect the foam motor filter or replaced if damaged.

• To remove: Remove the pail. Use the pull tab (A) on the edge of the filter to loosen it from the inlet chamber wall. Squeeze from both sides toward the center of the housing, then carefully remove it.
• To reinstall: Squeeze the filter to move it past the inlet opening (B), let it bear against the unit wall by releasing pressure, and make sure the rigid ring sits in its groove for proper sealing. Ensure the pull tab remains accessible for future removal.

Caution: Reinstall the filter properly — correct location is critical for motor protection.

Foam Motor Filter (All Units)

A foam motor safety filter at the top of the vacuum chamber protects against dirt being pulled into the motor if the disposable bag or sealed HEPA filter is torn. Check and clean when replacing the bag or removing the HEPA filter. Brush it clean, or hand wash in mild detergent solution if excessively soiled, rinse, and let dry completely before reinstalling.

Caution: Operating the power unit without the foam motor filter will void the warranty.

To remove: take out the debris pail and disposable bag or permanent filter, lift the center of the wire retaining the foam motor filter, and slide the filter out. Reverse to reinstall.

Secondary HEPA Filter (PP650 only)

This is a disposable HEPA filter — do not attempt to wash it, as this will damage it. Replace every 5 years.

1. If installed, detach the exhaust line from the top of the unit.
2. Disassemble the upper part from the lower part of the top cap assembly by pushing on the 4 retaining tabs (one by one) and pulling the upper part to disengage.
3. Discard the used filter and replace with a new one (part no. S10941416), installed with the gasket on top.
4. Snap the upper part of the top cap back into place and reconnect the exhaust line if needed.

Warranty

NuTone warrants its central vacuum power unit to the original consumer purchaser against defects in materials and workmanship for 5 years (PP500), 8 years (PP600), and 10 years (PP650). The first year covers parts and labor at an authorized service center; after the first year, parts only are covered. This warranty does not apply to installation or the installed tubing system. Hoses, brushes, filters, attachments, and accessories are warranted for 1 year (excluding consumables like light bulbs and belts). Register your product at www.nutone.com/register.
