Leviton ZW4SF — Decora Smart Z-Wave Plus v2 Fan Speed Controller User Manual

Getting Started Guide for the Leviton Decora Smart Z-Wave Plus Fan Speed Controller (Cat. No. ZW4SF), a Z-Wave enabled device that lets you select one of 4 fan speeds or turn a ceiling fan off from a smartphone, tablet, or by voice with a compatible Z-Wave hub.

What You Need to Install

• A Z-Wave compatible hub
• A Z-Wave mesh network to join within 30 feet of the installation location — do not use with metal wallplates, as they can interfere with communication
• An available interior wallbox with hot, neutral, fan load, and ground wires (warning: do not use with aluminum wire)
• For use with one or more ceiling paddle fans with split-capacitor or shaded pole motors, not to exceed a total of 1.5A. Not for use with lighting loads, including ceiling fan light kits.
• If the fan is controlled from more than one location, a DD00R remote is required — see the DD00R installation instructions for wiring

Installation Overview

Warning: To avoid fire, shock, or death, turn off power at the circuit breaker before wiring.

1. Remove the wallplate and disconnect the existing switch.
2. Restore power briefly and carefully test wires with a voltage tester to find the line (hot) wire, then turn power back off at the circuit breaker.
3. Identify and mark your wires. Neutral wires are required to operate this device — typically white, and bundled inside the back of the switch box, along with the load, line, and ground wires. A traveler wire is used only for 3-way installations.
4. Work on only one connection at a time; connect wires as marked and secure the connections.
5. Gently push wires into the wallbox — do not overtighten wallbox screws.
6. Install the wallplate base and snap on the Decora wallplate.
7. Restore power. Installation is complete.

If your wallbox wiring looks different from the standard configuration, call a licensed electrician.

SmartStart Enrollment

The Fan Speed Controller supports SmartStart — scan the Z-Wave QR code found on the top of the controller (or the back of the box) with a controller providing SmartStart inclusion. No further action is required; the product is added automatically within 10 minutes of being switched on and in network range. The QR code, DSK, and PIN code are printed on the label on the top of the unit.

Adding to a Z-Wave Hub

Network Wide Inclusion

1. Hold the top of the paddle for 7 seconds to enter programming mode — the status light turns amber, then blinks after release.
2. Tap the top of the paddle 1 time — the status light quickly flashes green.
3. Follow your Z-Wave controller's directions to complete the inclusion process.
4. On success, the status light turns off then flashes green 4 times. If unsuccessful, it flashes red 4 times.

Classic Inclusion (for older controllers)

1. Position the controller 3 to 35 feet from the device (depending on controller age).
2. Hold the top of the paddle for 7 seconds to enter programming mode.
3. Follow the Z-Wave controller instructions to enter inclusion mode, then tap the top of the paddle 1 time — the status light flashes green quickly, and the controller confirms successful inclusion.

Exclusion From a Network

Best practice is to use the exclusion command in the Z-Wave controller: hold the paddle top for 7 seconds to enter programming mode, follow the controller's exclusion directions, then tap the paddle top once.

Factory Default Reset

Use only when the controller is inoperable or missing (exclusion is preferred otherwise). Hold the top of the paddle for a total of 14 seconds — first 7 seconds turns the status light amber, continuing another 7 seconds flashes it red/amber quickly. Release to reset the device.

Customization

Status Light Behavior

Enter programming mode (hold paddle top 7 seconds), tap the paddle top 4 times (status light flashes green/amber quickly), then choose:

• 1 tap: Status light on when fan is ON (shows current fan state)
• 2 taps: Status light on when fan is OFF (helps locate the controller in a dark room)
• 3 taps: Status light always off

Minimum and Maximum Speed

Set the max speed lower than full to prevent wobbling, or raise the minimum for larger fans that struggle to start at the lowest level.

• Enter programming mode, tap the paddle top 5 times (flashes red/amber), then tap 1 time for Minimum speed or 2 times for Maximum speed. Use the fan speed bar to adjust, then hold the paddle top to exit.

Turn-On Speed

Enter programming mode, tap the paddle top 7 times (flashes red/amber), then use the fan speed bar to set the desired turn-on speed, or select Off to always return to the last-used level. Hold the paddle top to exit.

Troubleshooting

• Fan turns on but doesn't run as fast as it should: Use the fan speed bar to select 100%. If the fan has a pull chain or similar speed control, ensure it's set to 100% and use only the Decora Smart controller to set fan speed.
• Intermittent operation: Confirm the load doesn't exceed ratings, and confirm a neutral wire is connected.

Safety First

• Warning: Do NOT use for control of high-power heating appliances such as portable heaters — unexpected consequences can occur (e.g. an empty coffee pot remotely turned on, or a fire if clothing is draped over a remotely-activated heater).
• Will not control lighting used with electronic low-voltage/high-frequency power supply transformers, or high-pressure discharge lamps (HID, mercury-vapor, sodium vapor, metal halide).
• Indoor use only. Install per local electrical codes; consult an electrician if unsure. Turn off power at the circuit breaker when servicing.
