    September 08, 2026 5 min read

Programming and Troubleshooting Guide for the Kwikset SmartCode keypad deadbolt line — Mastercode setup, user codes, and troubleshooting.

    Full text manual (for reference)

Programming and Troubleshooting Guide for the Kwikset SmartCode keypad deadbolt line — covers setting up the optional Mastercode, adding user codes with Mastercode enabled, and troubleshooting the turnbutton, keypad, smart home pairing, and battery.

    1. Mastercode

    About the Mastercode

Using a Mastercode is an optional, added-security measure. It is not enabled by default. A Mastercode is used to add and delete user codes, but it cannot unlock the door (unless the same code is also programmed as a user code, which is not recommended). The Mastercode must be 4-8 digits.

Programming timeout: if no button is pressed for five seconds, the system will time out and you'll need to restart the procedure.

    Enabling and Setting the Mastercode

    1. Keep the door open. Press and HOLD the Program button until the keypad flashes green (about 5 seconds).
    2. Enter new Mastercode.
    3. Press Lock button once.
    4. Re-enter Mastercode.
    5. Press Lock button once.
    6. Make sure switch #3 is on, and press the Program button once. If you hear three beeps and see the keypad flash green three times, the Mastercode is enabled.

If programming is successful, the keypad flashes green once with one beep. If unsuccessful, the keypad flashes red three times with three beeps — make sure the Mastercode has not already been programmed, and attempt again, entering the same new Mastercode in steps 2 and 4. Note: the lock will time out after five seconds.

Adding User Codes with the Mastercode Enabled

The procedure for adding user codes is different when the Mastercode is enabled. For instructions on adding user codes when the Mastercode is disabled, see the Installation and User Guide that came with your lock.

    1. Keep the door open. Press the Program button once. The keypad flashes green and you hear three beeps.
    2. Enter Mastercode.
    3. Press Lock button once.
    4. Press the Program button the number of times that corresponds to the user code position being programmed (e.g., press three times for the third code).
    5. Enter new user code.
    6. Press Lock button once.
    7. While the door is open and locked, test the user code to make sure it unlocks the door.

If unsuccessful (red flash x3, three beeps), make sure the user code isn't a duplicate, is 4-8 digits, and that a valid Mastercode was entered in step 2.

    Disabling and Deleting the Mastercode

    1. Keep the door open. Press and HOLD the Program button until the keypad flashes green (about 5 seconds).
    2. Press Lock button once.
    3. Enter Mastercode.
    4. Press Lock button once.
    5. Re-enter Mastercode.
    6. Press Lock button once.
    7. Make sure switch #3 is on, and press the Program button once. If you don't immediately hear three beeps and see the keypad flash green three times, the Mastercode is disabled.

    2. Troubleshooting: Locked Turnbutton

Symptom: The turnbutton cannot rotate; the lock beeps, the keypad flashes red, and the door cannot lock or unlock.

Cause: The set screw in the lever was not fully tightened.

Fix: Fully tighten the pre-installed set screw at the bottom of the interior lever.

    3. Troubleshooting: Keypad

    The keypad is unresponsive

Install a fresh set of batteries and turn switch #3 to ON. Test each button (one at a time) and listen for a beep on each press. If beeping is not heard on all buttons, contact Technical Support.

Keypad lockout: if three incorrect codes are entered within one minute, the keypad locks for 60 seconds.

The Lock button does not lock the door

    • No user codes programmed: the keypad flashes red three times with three beeps. Program at least one user code and test again.
    • Battery too low: also indicated by red flash x3 / three beeps. Replace with a fresh set of batteries.

    4. Troubleshooting: Smart Home Systems

The lock fails to pair with a smart home system

    • Not fully removed from a previous network: follow your smart home system's instructions to exclude/unpair the device from any other network, then attempt pairing again.
    • Too far from controller: some Z-Wave systems require the lock be within 12" of the controller during pairing. Remove the interior assembly from the mounting plate, keep batteries installed, bring it next to the controller, and pair. The lock may need to remain stationary for 60 seconds during pairing.

Anti-tamper alarm note: some locks sound an alarm if the interior is disconnected from the exterior. If heard: remove the battery pack from the interior, remove the exterior assembly from the door, reconnect the cable between exterior and interior assemblies, reinstall the battery pack, then pair while interior and exterior are connected.

The lock appears in the controller but can't be controlled

    • Needs a repeater/router: add repeaters if the lock and controller are far apart.
    • Network configuration changed: perform the "rediscover" process in your system's interface if repeaters/routers were moved.
    • Lock in sleep mode: lock and unlock with a key to transmit status. If it still doesn't communicate, unpair and re-pair the lock. Add a repeater/router if none exist.
    • Light module/switch not beaming capable: for Z-Wave, ensure the module/switch between controller and lock is beaming capable; for ZigBee, ensure the router is reachable by both.

    5. Troubleshooting: Battery

    • Drains within one day: the lock must be replaced — contact Technical Support.
    • Drains within one week: check for keypad error (see keypad error test above), or check whether the Wireless Card LEDs are staying on (remove battery pack, hold Program button 5 seconds, replace battery pack; contact Support if LEDs persist).
    • Drains within a few weeks: could be a false low-battery report from the smart home system's UI (confirm at the lock via switch #1's status LED), the smart home controller's frequent communication draining the battery (test the lock standalone for a week), or the controller's ping frequency set too high (decrease it).

    6. Battery FAQ

How long will the lock operate on a set of batteries?
Based on 10 operations per day, a single new set of Alkaline batteries will operate the lock for over a year.
What type of batteries do you recommend?
New non-rechargeable Alkaline batteries only, for best results.
I'm planning to be away for several months — will my lock work when I get back?
Yes. When idling, the system consumes minimum power (close to battery shelf life). With alkaline batteries, the lock should be operable after years of idle.
I replaced my batteries less than a year ago and need to replace them again — why?
Check your door alignment. If the deadbolt makes several unsuccessful attempts to lock/unlock, the door may be warped and the latch may not line up correctly with the strike, which reduces battery life. Avoid turning on the keypad light unnecessarily.
    What settings maximize battery life?
Set switches #1, #2, and #3 to the OFF position.
