Kwikset Convert Smart Lock Conversion Kit (KW9914010x) — Installation and User Guide

Installation and User Guide for the Kwikset Convert Smart Lock Conversion Kit (model KW9914010x), a Z-Wave® Plus retrofit device that upgrades an existing deadbolt to smart-lock operation.

Tools Needed

• Phillips head screwdriver
• Ruler
• 4 AA batteries
• Existing key

Step 1 — Prepare Your Door

• Confirm your existing deadbolt is compatible: a standard deadbolt mounted separately from the handle below it works. Rim locks, mortise locks, and integrated interior deadbolts are not compatible.
• Verify your door is aligned — it should lock/unlock smoothly without pushing, pulling, or lifting. Misaligned doors may need a Warped Door Service Kit (Kwikset Support: 1-866-863-6584).
• Confirm door thickness is 1-3/8" or 1-3/4" (35mm or 44mm).
• Open the door, extend the latch bolt, and make sure the key is not in the deadbolt exterior. Optionally secure the exterior with masking tape.
• Remove all existing deadbolt hardware from the interior side of the door.

Step 2 — Determine Your Parts Kit

Look at the shape of the torque blade (the part sticking out through the latch) to select the correct kit:

Step 3 — Install the Mounting Plate

1. Place the mounting plate on the door so the torque blade inserts through the center hole; keep it parallel to the door edge.
2. Secure with mounting screws, tightened evenly. (Kwikset/Weiser only: test a thicker screw first — if it doesn't fit, use the thinner screws.)
3. Remove masking tape, insert the key, and test the latch for smooth operation — adjust mounting screws if it doesn't extend/retract smoothly.
4. Remove the key and confirm the bolt is fully extended.

Step 4 — Install the Interior Assembly

1. Remove the interior cover and battery pack; ensure the turnpiece is vertical, and orient the shaft with the stripe vertical.
2. Install the correct adapter on the interior assembly (silver: tab on bottom; gold: keep slot vertical; black: curve on top) — press firmly onto the interior assembly.
3. Align the adapter with the torque blade and push the interior assembly onto the mounting plate (Schlage deadbolts may need adapter rotation to align).
4. Secure with two interior assembly screws.

Step 5 — Perform the Door Handing Process

This teaches the lock your door's orientation and is crucial for proper operation.

1. Install 4 AA batteries in the battery pack (ensure correct polarity; use new, non-rechargeable alkaline batteries only).
2. With the door open, insert the battery pack while pressing and holding the Program button for 3 seconds after insertion, then release.
3. The Status LED flashes red and green, and the lock beeps — press and release the Program button again.
4. The latch bolt retracts/extends on its own to learn door orientation. Green LED = handing successful, proceed to Step 6. Red LED = see troubleshooting below.

Baldwin Estate deadbolts: if the latch bolt is to the right of the interior assembly and the Status LED is solid red after handing, press and release the Program button again to restart the process. Other deadbolts: confirm batteries and interior assembly are correctly installed, then repeat Steps 5A-5D.

Step 6 — Check the Status LED

The Status LED blinks every six seconds: amber = locked, green = unlocked. Use your key to lock/unlock and verify correct LED status. If the LED shows the wrong status, flip switch #4 to ON to invert.

Step 7 — Add the Lock to Your Smart Home System

1. Initiate "add device" at your smart home controller.
2. When prompted, press button "A" on the lock interior once — the red LED illuminates when the lock enters Add Mode.
3. If successful, rename the lock in your system if applicable.
4. If unsuccessful, remove the lock from the controller/network per your system's instructions, press button "A" once, and repeat Steps 7A-7C. Some Z-Wave® systems require the lock be within 12" of the controller — remove the interior assembly from the door to perform pairing closer to the controller if needed.

Step 8 — Install the Interior Cover

The cover's window is locked by default to prevent tampering with lock settings; slide it up for access to programming buttons, or remove the security screw to unlock it permanently. Install the cover and screws (may need to rotate the turnpiece to align with the shaft). Note: the interior cover and screws must be removed for battery access.

Reference Guide

Switches (adjustable via some smart home apps)

• 1. Status LED — blinks every 6 seconds; ON = factory default
• 2. Auto-Lock — automatically re-locks 30 seconds after unlocking; OFF = factory default (caution: can lock you out)
• 3. Audio — beeping during programming/operation; ON = factory default
• 4. Invert — use only if the Status LED communicates the opposite of actual lock status

Status LED Notifications

• Amber flash — door is locked
• Green flash — door is unlocked
• Red flash — the 4 AA batteries are low and need replacement

Factory Reset

1. Remove the battery pack.
2. Press and hold the Program button while reinserting the battery pack; keep holding for 30 seconds until the lock beeps and the Status LED flashes red.
3. Press the Program button once more — when the LED flashes green and beeps once, the reset is complete.
4. Perform the door handing process again (Step 5) to re-teach door orientation and re-pair to your smart home system.

Important Safeguards

• Read all instructions in their entirety and familiarize yourself with all warnings/cautions.
• Always have access to your lock's standard key; if using Auto-Lock, carry your key to avoid lockout.
• Replace low batteries immediately.
• Restrict access to the lock's back panel and routinely check settings for unauthorized changes.
• This lock, like any lock, may be defeated by forcible or technical means — no lock substitutes for caution and awareness of your environment.

This is a Security-Enabled Z-Wave Plus product and must be used with a Security-Enabled Z-Wave controller for full functionality.
