  • GE/Interlogix NX-208E Two-Wire Smoke Loop Expander — Installation & Programming

    September 08, 2026 4 min read

Installation and programming instructions for the GE/Interlogix NX-208E Two-Wire Smoke Loop Expander for NetworX NX-6/NX-8 series control panels.

    Full text manual (for reference)

Installation and startup instructions for the GE Security/Interlogix NX-208E Two-Wire Smoke Loop Expander, a microprocessor-controlled zone expander for NetworX NX-6, NX-8, NX-8-CF, NX-8E, and NX-8E-CF control panels.

    Product Summary

The NX-208E is a microprocessor-controlled 2-wire smoke expander for the NetworX NX-6, NX-8, NX-8-CF, NX-8E, and NX-8E-CF control panels. One NX-208E module can be added to the NX control panel with a maximum zone count of 8 zones. Each expander has an optional tamper input, making it ideal for use in a remote location.

Important: Do not add normally open contact devices to an NX-208E loop (i.e. sounders, heat detectors, pull stations, water flow devices, etc.)

    Installation Guidelines

Inside the can, several 2-holed insertion points allow for either vertical or horizontal placement of the modules. Each insertion point has two sizes of holes — a larger hole and a smaller hole.

    1. The black plastic PCB guides are grooved on one edge where the PC board will be seated. The end with the half-moon protrusion fits into the larger hole; the smaller hole is for the screw.
    2. Place the first PCB guide in the top insertion point, grooved edge downward, half-moon protrusion in the large hole (no force required). Insert a screw into the smaller hole (from inside the can) to secure it. Position the second guide opposite the first (grooved edge up) in the lower insertion point using the same procedure, then screw it in securely.
    3. The PC board should slide freely in the grooves of both guides.

Static caution: Be free of static electricity before handling circuit boards. Wear a grounding strap or touch a bare metal surface to discharge static electricity.

    Wiring Connections & Terminal Descriptions

    Terminal Function
TAMPER / COM Connect normally closed tamper switch between this pin and COM.
DATA Connect to the DATA terminal of the control panel.
COM Connect to the COM terminal of the control panel.
AUX+ Connect to the AUX+ terminal of the control panel.
DCIN Optionally connect to an auxiliary 12V or 24V power supply (e.g. NX-320E). Be sure to connect GND of the power supply to the NX-208E.
ZONE8- / ZONE8+ Connect to negative/positive side of the smoke detector. Open (trouble) or short (alarm) sounds the keypad by default (programmable).
ZONE7- through ZONE1+ Wired the same way as ZONE8-/ZONE8+.

NX-208E DCIN rating: 31mA at 12 VDC / 62mA at 24 VDC; Maximum 3.84 Amps with 8 detectors per loop. NX-208E AUX+ rating: 31mA in at 12VDC in Normal Standby or Alarm condition.

    Enrolling the Module

NetworX control panels automatically find and store the presence of all keypads, zone expanders, wireless receivers, and other modules connected to the data terminal, allowing them to be supervised. To enroll, enter the Program Mode of the control panel; when Program Mode is exited, the panel automatically enrolls the devices. Enrollment takes about 12 seconds, during which the "Service" LED illuminates. If a module is not detected after enrollment, the "Service" LED will illuminate.

Module Address: This 2-wire smoke module has a fixed address of 95.

    Programming Mode

    1. Press [*]-[8] to enter Program Mode. All function key LEDs begin to flash.
    2. Enter the "Go To Program" code (factory default [9]-[7]-[1]-[3]). The Service LED flashes and function LEDs illuminate steady.
    3. Press [9]-[5]-[#] for the fixed address (95) of the 2-wire smoke module. The Armed LED illuminates while waiting for a programming location.
    4. Enter the desired programming location; the Armed LED flashes while entering.
    5. Press [#]. If valid, the Armed LED extinguishes, the Ready LED illuminates, and binary data for the first segment displays on the zone LEDs.
    6. To change data, enter the data followed by [*]. The location auto-increments to the next segment. Repeat until the last segment; press [#] to exit.

Location 0 — Enabling the Zones (Loops)

Used to enable/disable zones 1–8 (1=Zone1 ... 8=Zone8). Factory default: all zones disabled.

Location 1 — Setting the Zone Bank During Communication

Selects the bank used by zones 1–192 during communication (a zone may reside in any of 24 banks). Entering [1] through [23] remaps zones 1–8 in Location 0 to the corresponding range (e.g. entering [9] causes zone 1 to become zone 73, zone 8 becomes 80). Factory default: 1 (Zones 9–16).

    Location 2 — Special Flags

    Factory default: all flags disabled.

    • Flag 1 — Enables the 24V power supply option. Requires a total of four 12V, 17AH batteries: connect 2 in parallel, connect the other 2 in parallel, then connect those two sets in series.
    • Flag 2 — Disables the temporal (sounder pattern).
    • Flag 3 — Enables temporal regardless of panel programming.
    • Flag 4 — Enables tamper.
    • Flag 5 — Disables voltage reversal (does not perform voltage reversal functions when in alarm; used with smokes that have sounders).
