User manual for the First Alert/BRK ZCOMBO Z-Wave Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector.
User manual (Spanish-language original: Manual del Usuario) for the First Alert/BRK ZCOMBO Z-Wave Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector — a battery-powered combo alarm with independent smoke and CO sensors and Z-Wave signaling to a home security/automation network.
Per NFPA 72 (smoke detectors) and NFPA 720 (CO detectors) recommendations:
Wall-mounted units should be placed 4–12 inches (10–30cm) from the wall/ceiling vertex. Ceiling-mounted units should be as close to the center as possible, at least 4 inches (10cm) from any wall.
Note: The battery door cannot close if batteries are not installed — this safety feature warns that the unit will not function without batteries.
The detector requires two standard AA batteries. Acceptable replacements: Energizer E91, Duracell MN1500. Do not use rechargeable batteries. Clean battery and unit contacts before installing, observe correct polarity, and dispose of/recycle used batteries per local regulations — never dispose of batteries in fire (risk of explosion or leakage). Keep batteries away from children; if a battery is swallowed, contact a poison control center, physician, or the National Battery Ingestion Hotline (202-625-3333) immediately.
Test the unit weekly using the built-in Test button — never use an open flame to test. Press and hold the Test/Silence button for 3–5 seconds or until the alarm sounds. During test you should observe: horn sounds 3 beeps-pause-3 beeps with the Power/Smoke LED flashing red and CO LED off, followed by 4 beeps-pause-4 beeps with Power/Smoke LED off and CO LED flashing red. If the unit does not respond, verify batteries are correctly installed and re-test; if it still fails, replace the unit immediately.
The Test/Silence button can temporarily silence a nuisance alarm — but this is for convenience only and does not correct underlying problems. Always inspect your home for a potential issue after any alarm.
| CO Concentration | Required Alarm Response Time |
|---|---|
| 400 ppm | 4–15 minutes |
| 150 ppm | 10–50 minutes |
| 70 ppm | 60–240 minutes |
The detector is designed not to alarm at a constant 30 ppm level for 30 days, and is UL-tested resistant to false alarms from methane (500 ppm), butane (300 ppm), heptane (500 ppm), ethyl acetate (200 ppm), isopropyl alcohol (200 ppm), and carbon dioxide (5000 ppm). Audible alarm: 85 dB minimum at 10 feet (3m).
Mild exposure: mild headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue ("flu-like"). Medium exposure: severe headache, drowsiness, confusion, rapid heartbeat. Extreme exposure: convulsions, loss of consciousness, heart/lung failure, or death.
This detector is intended for indoor use in ordinary single-family residential settings — it is not designed for OSHA industrial/commercial compliance and does not measure adherence to OSHA norms. Smoke/CO detectors have limitations: they only detect smoke or CO that reaches the sensor at the detector's location; doors or obstructions can affect the speed at which CO/smoke reaches the unit. A detector on one floor may not detect a hazard originating on a different floor. Smoke/CO detectors do not replace life insurance, and manufacturer BRK Brands does not warrant or imply that the units will protect lives against fire or CO poisoning in every case.
