    Installation manual for the ELK-M1EZ8CB — a cross-platform security and home automation control panel, part of the ELK M1 family. A professional-grade hybrid burglary/fire alarm control that also supports powerful "Whenever/And/Then" rules-based automation, lighting control, thermostats, and PC integration via ELK-RP software. Meets SIA CP-01 standards for false alarm reduction.

    Planning & Site Survey

    Before installing: read the entire manual, review all UL/NFPA requirements, physically survey the site, and discuss installation requirements with the customer. A smoke detector should be located in each sleeping area and between sleeping areas and the main living area; homes with basements or multiple levels need at least one smoke detector per level. All perimeter openings below 18" should be protected.

    Mounting

    Mount the control indoors only, in a dry, secure location with ambient temperature 32°–120°F (0°–49°C) — never outdoors, in damp locations, or unconditioned attics. Choose a central location near an unswitched power outlet with easy access for wiring. Keypads should be mounted 50–58 inches above the floor, away from direct sunlight.

    Zone Wiring

    Zones 1–8 are on the main board; additional zones (17–208) come via expanders in groups of 16. Each pair of zones shares a common negative terminal. Zones can be wired with EOL (end-of-line) resistor supervision (default, uses a 2,200 ohm resistor), or without a resistor for simple N.C./N.O. contacts. Firmware 4.3.5+ supports a Four-State Zone configuration (2 series resistors) that distinguishes alarm, tamper, short, and open conditions independently. Zone 8 can be configured for 2-wire smoke detectors (requires an 820 ohm EOL resistor instead of 2,200 ohm, and Jumper JP1 set to "2 WIRE SMOKE").

    Power & Battery

    • Powered by a UL-Listed Class 2 transformer, 16.5VAC, 45VA minimum (ELK-TRG1640) — never connect to a switched outlet.
    • Backup: 12V sealed lead-acid battery, 5Ah minimum (ELK-1250), expandable up to 18Ah; test regularly with an ELK-BLT Battery Life Tester and replace every 3–5 years.
    • An automatic battery load test runs every 24 hours; a manual test is also available from the keypad diagnostics menu.
    • Low Battery trouble triggers below 11.2VDC; the control shuts down to protect the battery below 10.2VDC. Never reverse the battery leads — a warning LED will illuminate if reversed.

    Telephone & Data Bus Wiring

    The telephone interface uses an RJ-31X jack for line seizure during central-station communication — never connect the RS-232 port directly to a phone line. Keypads and expanders connect via a 4-wire RS-485 "data bus" running at 38,400 bps; CAT5/CAT6 cable is recommended. Critical: the data bus requires EOL termination — never install more than 2 terminating resistor jumpers on the same bus branch, or communication errors will result. Ideally, use no more than 2 home-run cables with daisy-chained devices, terminating only the last device on each run.

    Outputs

    • Output 2 (Alarm): UL-Listed bell/siren only, current-limited to 1A, supervised.
    • Output 3: Form-C relay (Com/N.O./N.C.), 4A @ 12–24VDC.
    • Outputs 7–16: Low-current (10mA max) +12V switched positive outputs for LEDs/relays; an ELK-M1RB relay board adds 8 general-purpose relays.

    • System Diagnostics: Data bus error/retry counter (per device address), system supply voltage, per-zone real-time voltage display (with low/high alarm thresholds), and last on-hook telephone line voltage reading.
    • Walk Test: Runs a local test of all zones on a keypad's area with siren/communicator disabled — violated zones display their name and total tested count.
    • View History: Displays the last 512 logged events (arm, disarm, alarm, trouble, etc.) with timestamps.

    Grounding & Lightning Protection

    Do NOT connect any control terminal (especially negative terminals) to earth ground — isolating the control from ground gives the best protection against lightning and transients. An ELK-950 surge protector on the incoming telephone line is still recommended.

    Warranty

    Manufacturer's obligation under the M1 Limited Warranty is limited to repairing or replacing defective product at its option. The warranty does not cover damage from misuse, unauthorized modification, or improper installation.
