Installation instructions and surge suppressor specifications for the DataComm Electronics 45-0041-WH Recessed Low Voltage Media Plate with Duplex Surge Suppressor, a retrofit-only wall plate with SurgeBloc® protection.

    Full text manual (for reference)

Instruction/installation sheet for the DataComm Electronics 45-0041-WH Recessed Low Voltage Media Plate with Duplex Surge Suppressor — used to install low-voltage cables and surge-protected power behind a flat panel TV, amplifier, or other AV device. This is a retrofit-only product (the old workbox cannot be attached to a stud) and can be installed upright or sideways.

    Parts Included

    • 45-0041-WH Recessed Low Voltage Media Plate
    • Old Work Electrical Box
    • 15 Amp/125 Volt Duplex Surge Suppressor
    • Three (3) Wire Nuts
    • Four (4) Screws

Tools needed: drywall saw, 6 ft. tape measure, pencil, screwdriver.

    SurgeBloc® Surge Protection

The unit uses a SurgeBloc® module to protect connected loads from damaging voltage spikes caused by lightning strikes near the line, switching of inductive/motor loads, or RFI. SurgeBloc® cannot survive a direct lightning strike on the service power line. If the surge protection component fails, the unit sounds an audible alarm to alert you. To silence the alarm, unplug the surge module and replace it with a new SurgeBloc® module (Cooper Wiring Devices Replacement Module #1209) to restore protection. While the alarm sounds and the module is removed, the receptacle still functions as a normal duplex receptacle without surge protection.

    Warning

Before installing, switch the circuit breaker OFF or remove the fuse(s) and test that the power is off. Install in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local codes.

    Installation Steps

    1. Fig. 1 – Top view: Note the space needed between the drywall and the studs. The receptacle side of the media plate must be at least 3″ from the stud but no more than 5″.
    2. Fig. 2: Using the supplied template (see below), trace the opening and cut a hole in the drywall to size with a drywall knife.
    3. Fig. 3: Run the source of power to the included workbox.
    4. Fig. 4: Connect the Recessed Media Plate to a piece of 12/2 or 14/2 with-ground UL-approved building wire using the three supplied wire nuts — hot (black) to black, neutral (white) to white, ground (green or bare) to green. For shock protection, the receptacle must be properly grounded — use copper wire only. Screw the surge suppressor into the workbox until firmly secured.
    5. Fig. 5: Use the four supplied screws to secure the workbox to the mounting studs on the backside of the media plate.
    6. Fig. 6: Pull all video and audio cords through the recessed opening. Slide the receptacle side of the plate into the opening first, then swing the opposite side into position until flush with the wall. Screw down the wing screws to fasten against the back of the drywall. Switch the circuit breaker back on, plug in cables, and install the flat panel TV mounting bracket per its manufacturer's instructions.
