    Installation instructions for the DataComm Electronics 45-0028-WH Recessed Pro-Power Kit with Duplex Surge Suppressor — a retrofit wall-plate kit that hides both power and low-voltage A/V cabling behind flat panel TVs and other equipment while providing built-in surge protection.

    Overview

    The Recessed Pro-Power Kit with Duplex Surge Suppressor lets installers run power and low-voltage cables behind a flat panel TV, amplifier, or other A/V equipment, either at the display location or back to an equipment room / head-end. It consists of a top plate with a duplex surge receptacle and a bottom plate with a straight-blade inlet, connected by standard electrical wire run inside the wall.

    Important Safety Instructions

    • Follow local electrical code for installation.
    • The electrical parts in this kit are designed to be used only together as a kit — none of the individual electrical parts are intended for standalone use.
    • This product is not designed to be part of a home's or commercial building's permanent electrical wiring system — it is a retrofit-only product because the electrical outlet box cannot be attached to a stud.
    • The installation is only energized when the supplied 6 ft. cord is plugged into the recessed straight-blade inlet on the bottom cable plate, and the cord's other end is plugged into a surge protector or wall receptacle.
    • If you are not familiar with home wiring systems, have a qualified electrician install this product. Only licensed professionals should install this product.
    • For shock protection, this device must be properly grounded. Use copper wire only.
    • Do not use this product near water (bath tub, sink, wet basement, pool, etc.).

    Surge Protection Behavior

    The duplex surge receptacle alerts you if surge protection is ever lost. It protects against short-term over-voltage conditions and RFI (radio frequency interference), but cannot survive a direct lightning strike on the service power line. If the receptacle has absorbed surges beyond its capacity and is no longer providing protection, an audible alarm sounds. To silence the alarm, turn the "Alarm Off" screw on the front of the receptacle clockwise — note that once silenced, the receptacle continues to function as a normal duplex outlet but without surge protection. A power-on indicator light confirms power is present and the suppression circuit is functional; light off means power is interrupted, and a flashing light means the surge circuitry has been damaged.

    Installation Steps

    1. Plan Locations

    Choose the location for the flat panel TV mounting bracket, then select locations for both wall plates (top and bottom) of the kit.

    2. Top Plate (Duplex Surge Receptacle)

    1. Maintain 3"–5" of space between the receptacle side of the mid-size plate and the nearest stud (plates mount between studs).
    2. Using the supplied template, trace and cut the opening in the drywall with a drywall saw.
    3. Run 14/2 w/ground UL-approved electrical building wire (not included) between the top and bottom openings. Pull it through a knockout in the top plate's electrical outlet box.
    4. Pull the other end of the wire through a knockout in the bottom plate's electrical outlet box.
    5. Wire the duplex surge receptacle: connect the hot (black) wire to the brass terminal, the neutral (white) wire to the silver terminal, and the ground (green/bare) wire to the green terminal. Use copper wire only. Screw the receptacle into the outlet box once wired.
    6. Secure the outlet box to the mounting studs using the four supplied screws, on the backside of the mid-size plate.
    7. Before inserting the plate into the wall opening, pull all low-voltage A/V cables through the low-voltage cable opening (remove the flexible sealing plate if you need to fit more than 4 cables). Slide the plate into the opening starting at the bottom, then swing the top into position until flush. Screw down the winged screws to fasten against the back of the drywall.

    3. Bottom Plate (Straight Blade Inlet)

    1. Wire the straight-blade inlet: connect hot (black) to black, neutral (white) to white, and ground (green/bare) to the green wire. Fasten all three wire nuts tightly.
    2. Secure the outlet box to the mounting studs with the four supplied screws.
    3. Pull low-voltage/A/V cables through the low-voltage opening first (remove the flexible seal plate for more than 4 cables), then slide the plate into the opening from the side and swing into position until flush. Screw down the winged screws.

    4. Finish

    1. Install the flat panel TV mounting bracket per the bracket manufacturer's instructions, then hang the TV.
    2. Plug the TV into the top duplex receptacle.
    3. Plug the 6 ft. cord set into the bottom straight-blade inlet, then plug the cord's male end into a nearby wall receptacle to energize the system.

    Duplex Surge Receptacle Specifications

    Two 22mm square MOVs provide 240 joules / 15,000A of surge protection per mode. Meets UL Standards 1449 3rd Edition and 498; CSA certified.
