    September 08, 2026 9 min read

User guide for the ClearSounds TALK500ER Emergency Connect Telephone with wireless SOS pendant, amplification, and Caller ID.

    Full text manual (for reference)

User guide for the ClearSounds Communications® TALK500ER (model V508) Emergency Connect Telephone — an amplified, Caller ID phone with a wireless SOS pendant that automatically dials pre-programmed emergency contacts and plays a recorded message.

    Overview

The TALK500ER is a sound-amplifying telephone with Caller ID/Call Waiting ID, phonebook, memory dialing, and a waterproof wireless SOS pendant. Holding down the pendant button or the phone's SOS key activates an emergency call sequence: the phone beeps for about 15 seconds, then automatically dials the first stored emergency number and plays your pre-recorded message.

Important: The TALK500ER should be tested regularly to ensure proper delivery of the pre-recorded emergency message when activated. This is the user's responsibility. The TALK500ER does not guarantee that you will make contact or receive help — it is only an aid in calling for assistance.

Caution: The Talk500ER is capable of amplifying sounds to a loud volume. Adjust the volume control to minimum when not in use, and be aware that hearing damage can result from misuse.

    Installation

    Installing Batteries

The phone requires 4 AA batteries (not supplied) as backup for LCD/memory during a power failure — numbers and voice recordings are stored in non-volatile flash memory and won't be lost even without batteries installed. The pendant uses one 12V A23 battery; replace when its LED dims.

    Connecting the Telephone

    1. Plug one end of the telephone line cord into the TEL.LINE jack on the base.
    2. Plug the other end into the wall phone jack.
    3. Plug the coil cord into the handset's modular jack and the base.

    Connecting Power

Plug the AC adapter into the phone's power jack, then into a standard outlet. Use only the AC120V DC9V 200mA adapter provided — the adapter is required for the phone to work correctly.

    Wall Mounting

The phone can sit on a flat surface or mount on a telephone wall plate (not included). A mounting bracket (3¾" x 1½") is included for attaching to a wall plate; rotate the handset holder's hanging peg 180° to hold the handset in place when wall-mounted.

    Setup

    • Time/Date: Menu → ENTER TIME/DATE → Dial → set hour, minute, month, day with Up/Down and Dial to confirm.
    • Language: Menu → LANGUAGE → choose English, Italiano, Français, or Español. Note: in non-English languages, the phone announces phone numbers/digits/Caller ID only.
    • Voice Prompts ON/OFF: Menu → VOICE → toggle on/off.
    • Flash Time: Menu → FLASH → select desired flash time.
    • Tone/Pulse Dialing: Menu → Tone/Pulse → select dialing type (40/60 pulse or tone).
    • Ringer Volume: Slide the RINGER switch to Hi/Mid/Lo.
    • Handset Boost: Press the red +40dB BOOST button (Boost LED on), then adjust volume wheel (levels 1–9). Press again to turn off; resets to normal on hang-up.
    • Tone Control: Slide Tone control down to boost low frequencies, up to boost high frequencies (only effective when Boost is ON).
    • Speaker Volume: Slide the HI/LO switch.

    Making & Receiving Calls

    • Dialing: Pick up handset or press the speakerphone button, dial the number on the keypad.
    • Pre-Dialing: Dial the number first, then pick up the handset or press the speakerphone/Dial button to place the call.
    • Redial: Lift handset or press speakerphone, then press REDIAL (last number, up to 32 digits).
    • Pause: Press REDIAL at the desired point to insert a 3.6-second pause (for banking/long-distance services); press again for another 3.6 seconds.
    • Receiving: Phone rings, Ringer LED flashes, display shows CALL# and caller number/name (with Caller ID active); pick up handset or press speakerphone to answer.
    • Call Waiting: Press the Call Waiting button to hold the current call and take a second incoming call; press again to alternate. Note: pressing this without a Call Waiting subscription may disconnect the current call.
    • Mute: Press and hold MUTE so the other party can't hear you; release to resume talking.
    • Hearing Aid Compatibility: Compatible with inductively coupled hearing aids/cochlear processors — set the T-switch to “T” and hold the handset close to the device.

    Emergency (SOS) Setup & Use

    Pairing the Remote Pendant

Up to 5 pendants can be paired to the phone (FULL appears on a 6th attempt). Menu → REMOTE PENDANT → Dial → select PAIRING → Dial → press the red button on the pendant. PAIRED confirms success; PAIRING FAILURE indicates it didn't take.

    Recording the Emergency Message

Menu → RECORD MESSAGE → hold DIAL until a beep and the VOICE icon flashes, then speak into the speakerphone (max. 20 seconds). Release DIAL when finished; the phone plays the message back automatically.

Tip for your recorded message: remind callers to press 0 to talk (they then have up to 3 minutes), and to press 1 then 2 in sequence if they want to cancel the SOS sequence and stay on the line with you. If the caller doesn't press 1 then 2, the call disconnects and the phone dials the next emergency number. If callers don't press 0, they can only listen to your message, not talk back. Example message: “This is Mr. Jones. I have a problem, please press 0 to talk and listen in.”

    Checking the Emergency Message

Menu → CHECK MESSAGE → Dial to play it back. Press DELETE during playback to erase and re-record.

    Activating/Deactivating SOS

    • Hold the red pendant button, or the phone's SOS key, for about 15 seconds of beeping — the phone then auto-dials the first emergency number and plays your recorded message.
    • To cancel/deactivate SOS, press and hold the red pendant button for 5 seconds.
    • Maximum pendant operating range: about 100 feet.
    • The pendant can also answer incoming calls (single press) — be careful not to hold it too long, which triggers the emergency sequence instead.
    • If the first emergency call gets no response, or the caller doesn't press 1 then 2 to cancel SOS, the phone dials the next stored number. If none of the emergency calls get a response, the phone automatically redials the list 10 minutes later.
    • If no message is recorded, the phone announces a default emergency message when SOS is triggered.

    Emergency Installation Cautions

    • Install per the enclosed instructions and test the equipment immediately after installation, and periodically thereafter, to verify it can successfully report an alarm.
    • This equipment cannot report an alarm while another device on the same line (phone, answering machine, modem, etc.) is in use.
    • Save emergency phone numbers with EMERGENCY ON when storing them in the phone book.

    Phone Book

Available only in phone book mode (indicated by the phonebook icon — press the mode button once to toggle if it's off).

    • Store a Number: Menu → STORE NUMBER → Dial → enter number (up to 22 digits) → Dial → enter name (up to 16 letters) → Dial → choose EMERGENCY ON/OFF → Dial to save. Optionally record a voice tag by holding Dial and speaking after the beep (auto-stops after 3 sec).
    • Review: Press the mode button until the phonebook icon shows, then scroll with Up/Down or jump to an entry by its first letter using the keypad.
    • Dial from Phonebook: With the entry displayed, press DIAL — the phone dials automatically in speakerphone mode.
    • Edit: Select the entry, hold MENU for 2 seconds (shows EDIT?), press DIAL, then use Up/Down to move the cursor and DELETE/keypad to change digits or letters; confirm with DIAL (shows SAVED!).
    • Delete: Select the entry, press DELETE once (shows DELETE?), then hold DELETE for 2 seconds to confirm. Hold DELETE longer to trigger DELETE ALL? for the entire phonebook.
    • One-Touch Memory (M1/M2): Menu → STORE NUMBER → Dial → enter number → press M1 or M2 to save (shows SAVED!). Dial later by lifting the handset and pressing M1/M2, or pressing M1/M2 then lifting the handset.

    • Number-only calls show the number with time/date; NEW icon and New Call LED activate.
    • Name + number calls show both with time/date.
    • Blocked calls show PRIVATE; unavailable info shows UNAVAILABLE; long-distance calls show LONG DISTANCE.

    • Review with Up/Down (Up = more recent, Down = older); END OF LIST shows at either end.
    • Erase a single entry (DELETE, hold 2 sec to confirm) or all entries (hold DELETE until DELETE ALL? appears, hold 2 sec to confirm, shows NO CALLS).
    • Call back directly from the Caller ID list via DIAL (auto speakerphone dial-out); a leading “1” is auto-inserted for 10-digit numbers (can be toggled).
    • Copy a Caller ID entry to the phonebook: select entry, hold MENU 2 seconds (COPY TO MEMORY appears), press DIAL (shows SAVED!).

    Troubleshooting

    Symptom Fix
No dial tone Check all cord connections (including curly cord) and the AC adapter are securely plugged in; confirm the correct Tone/Pulse dialing mode; test another phone in the same jack.
Won't dial / dials slowly Check the phone is in the correct Tone/Pulse dialing mode.
No audible ringer Too many extensions/accessories on the line can lower ringer volume or impair call quality — try unplugging some.
No amplification Confirm the amplify/Boost button is ON (red light lit); check the AC adapter is plugged in properly.
Noise/static/interference on handset A filter may be required for homes with DSL lines or near radio towers.
Flashing red light won't stop You have un-reviewed Caller ID/Call Waiting info or a missed call — review it.
No Caller ID information Confirm you're subscribed to Caller ID through your local phone company.
No Caller ID while on a call Confirm your service includes “Caller ID on Call Waiting” (Type II Caller ID); also ensure no other extension is off-hook, which blocks display of the info.

    Regulatory

Complies with FCC Part 68 and ACTA requirements. A product identifier label (format US:AAAEQ##TXXXX) is on the bottom of the unit; provide it to your telephone company if requested. The Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) indicates how many devices can be connected to one line and still all ring — in most areas the total REN on a line should not exceed 5.0 (check with your local phone company for your area). This is a Class B digital device per FCC Part 15, and complies with Canadian ICES-003 / Industry Canada CS03 technical specifications. Hearing aid compatible. Not for use on coin service lines; connection to party lines is subject to state tariffs.

If your home has specially wired alarm equipment on the same phone line, verify that installing the TALK500ER does not disable it — consult your phone company or a qualified installer if unsure.
