Chief PDR Large Flat Panel Dual Arm Wall Mount — Installation Instructions

Installation instructions for the Chief Model PDR Large Flat Panel Dual Arm Wall Mount, a wall-mounted, dual swing-arm plasma/flat-panel mount with vertical, lateral, and rotational tilt tension adjustments, supporting landscape or portrait orientation and up to 200 lbs.

Overview

The PDR is a rugged, versatile, installer-friendly wall mount for large flat panel displays. Its dual arms extend 37" from the wall and pivot up to 90° left or right of center. The support posts for the dual arms ship centered but can be moved right or left to accommodate sites with limited wall space. The mount offers over an inch of height adjustment and pitch adjustment spanning 5° up to 15° down. Installation flow: draw a plumb line, install the two top lag bolts into dual wall studs, hang the PDR on its top bracket, install two lag bolts in the bottom bracket, make height adjustments, install the display, and route cables through the built-in path in the swing-out arms.

Important Warnings & Cautions

• WARNING: Improper installation can result in serious personal injury. Structural members must support five times the total weight of the equipment — reinforce the structure if needed before installing the PDR.
• WARNING: The installer is responsible for verifying the wall will safely support the combined load of all attached components.
• WARNING: The display weight placed on the PDR must not exceed 200 lbs. (90.72 kg), the mount's maximum load capacity.
• WARNING: Watch for pinch points — do not put fingers between movable parts.
• WARNING: Make sure the mount and brackets are correctly oriented.
• WARNING: The flag securing the display must be completely lowered at all times except when removing or installing the display.
• CAUTION: Check the unit for shipping damage before beginning installation.

Specifications

Interface: 14" x 14" STD Plasma Static Brackets (PSB).

Tools required: Allen wrench set, drill and bit set, wrench set (other tools may be needed depending on installation method).

Installation

Install the Mount — Mounting the Top Bracket

1. Locate two wood studs 16" apart on center. Determine the exact mounting location, considering screen size and the unit's total swing arm radius.
2. Using a stud sensor, locate the two wood studs for mounting.
3. Draw a level plumb line indicating the desired height of the top mounting bracket.
4. With an assistant, lift and hold the PDR against the wall; mark the mounting holes for two pilot holes centered in the wood studs, ensuring they are level.
5. Lay the PDR down on the floor with an assistant.
6. Drill two 7/32" pilot holes at the marked locations for the top bracket.
7. Install two 5/16" x 2-1/2" lag bolts and two 5/16" flat washers in the pilot holes — do NOT tighten yet; leave space to hang the PDR. (Make sure washers are installed in front of the top bracket, not behind it.)
8. With an assistant, lift and hang the PDR on the two lag bolts and washers.
9. Slide the PDR into the desired position and tighten the two lag bolts.

Mounting the Bottom Bracket

1. Mark the two mounting holes in the bottom mounting bracket, aligned parallel to the top bracket holes.
2. Drill two 7/32" pilot holes at the marked locations.
3. Install two 5/16" x 2-1/2" lag bolts and two 5/16" flat washers in the pilot holes.
4. Tighten the two lag bolts.

Adjust Height on the PDR

Height adjustment range is up to 1.08 inches. Using the included adjustment wrench, turn the adjustment nut clockwise to lower the unit height, or counterclockwise to raise it.

Install Cover Plates and End Caps

Cover plates and end caps have pressure-fitting ends that lock together. Install the cover plate over the top bracket, then the end cap onto the cover plate. Repeat for the bottom mounting bracket.

Mount the Display

1. Ensure power is off to the display before mounting.
2. Install the PSB interface bracket onto your plasma display per its specific manufacturer instructions.
3. Warning: Display may weigh in excess of 40 lbs. — always use two people and proper lifting technique.
4. While supporting both sides of the display, align the four mounting buttons on the display/interface bracket with the four mounting holes in the head assembly.
5. Lower the display into place, listening for an audible "click" confirming the ClickConnect mechanism has engaged and the mounting buttons are seated in the lower area of the mounting holes.
6. Warning: Improper installation can lead to the display falling, causing serious injury or equipment damage — ensure mounting buttons are completely engaged.
7. Connect and secure power/audio/video cables, leaving sufficient slack for swing arm movement.

Security note: Holes in the faceplate accept a padlock or similar locking device. For a more permanent lock, the pin and nuts can be removed from the upper holes and moved to the lower holes.

Cable Management

Warning: Make sure cables do not run through a pinch point.

1. Route power/audio/video cables through the cable channel in the top arm, leaving sufficient slack for extension, and secure with the supplied clips and tiewraps.
2. Route cables along the bottom arm using tiewraps, through the cable channel.
3. Caution: Do not route cables through holes in the display mounting plate — this can cause equipment damage.
4. Route cables to an open area behind the mounting plate, leaving slack for connection and extension.

Tension Adjustments

Vertical Tilt Tension Adjustment

1. With the display mounted, check for desired vertical tilt tension.
2. Adjust the Centris Select knob until the desired vertical tilt tension is obtained.
3. Tighten the vertical tilt lock screw to lock the mount at the desired vertical tilt.

Lateral Tilt Tension Adjustment

Caution: Overtightening lateral adjustment causes excessive wear and may distort adjustment components.

1. Using a 9/16" wrench (not provided), slightly tighten or loosen the lateral tilt tension adjustment nut.
2. Mount the display and check tilt tension.
3. Repeat until desired tension is achieved.

Rotational Tilt Tension Adjustment

1. Loosen or tighten the bottom rotational tilt tension adjustment nut as needed.
2. Mount the display and check rotational tilt tension.
3. Repeat until desired tension is achieved.

Swing Arm Adjustments

The dual swing arms ship centered in the top and bottom mounting brackets (standard configuration). The brackets have slotted holes allowing lateral adjustment of the swing arms depending on mount location, display size, and needed lateral movement for rotation.

Adjusting the Swing Arms Off-Center (No Disassembly)

Swing arms can be adjusted up to 1 inch left or right of center:

1. Remove the display from the mount.
2. Loosen four bolts (two top, two bottom) securing the swing arm assembly to the mounting brackets.
3. Move the swing arm assembly to the desired location.
4. Tighten the bolts.
5. Reinstall the display.

Reconfiguring the Swing Arms Left or Right of Center (Requires Disassembly)

Warning: Releasing the arm assembly from the mount may cause the arms and plate to fall if not handled carefully.

• Left of Center: Use the first and third slotted holes in the top and bottom mounting brackets.
• Right of Center: Use the third and fifth slotted holes in the top and bottom mounting brackets.

1. Remove the display from the mount.
2. Remove four bolts (two top, two bottom) securing the swing arm assembly.
3. Move the swing arm assembly to the desired left or right position.
4. Install the retaining pin assemblies (one top, one bottom) and secure with two bolts.
5. Install the four bolts (two top, two bottom) to secure the reconfigured swing arm assembly.
6. Tighten the bolts and reinstall the display.

Swing Arm Tension Adjustment

Swing arm tension is pre-set at the factory for displays near the top of the mount's weight capacity. If using a smaller display, it may be difficult to reposition after mounting — adjust tension as follows (display must be mounted first):

1. Locate the provided adjustment bar and wrench.
2. Place the adjustment bar into the socket head cap screw at the swing arm pivot point (repositioning the display if needed for access).
3. Using the wrench, turn the adjustment bar clockwise to increase tension, or counterclockwise to reduce tension. Small adjustments (1/8 turn or less) are typically all that's needed.
4. Check tension and repeat as needed. Note: switching from a smaller to a larger display may require increased tension.

Removing the Display from the Mount

1. Remove the bolt or padlock from the faceplate if used (if the pin was used as a permanent locking device, remove the nut and pin and move them from the lower holes back to the upper holes).
2. Pull back the flag on the upper mounting hole and press the pin down into the "Open" position.
3. Warning: Display may weigh in excess of 40 lbs. — always use two people and proper lifting technique.
4. Carefully lift the display from the mount.
5. Lift the pin and return the flag to the "Closed" position against the faceplate.
