    Installation instructions for the Channel Vision E Series Multi-Room Video Modulators (E2200, E3200, E4200 / C-0302, C-0303, C-0304) — devices that let you map audio/video sources (security cameras, VCR, laser disc, stereo, etc.) onto unused TV channels, distributed to every TV on your existing coax network.

    Overview

    The Channel Vision E Series Modulator makes it easy to map up to three audio/video sources onto unused channels on your television set(s) — watching security cameras, a laser disc player, VCR, or any other video signal becomes as easy as switching channels with your remote. Because the E Series Modulator merges these additional inputs into your existing TV signal "ahead of" your television sets, the new channels are available at every TV on the same coax network. You can even map a stereo system to an unused TV channel to pipe music throughout the house.

    ⚠ Safety Warning: Risk of electric shock — do not open, do not remove cover. Proper ventilation required. No user-serviceable parts inside; refer servicing to qualified personnel. This product should be installed by certified dealers only (call 800-840-0288 for the Channel Vision Training Manual and certification test).

    Basic Installation Steps

    1. Connect your video sources to the E Series Modulator the same way you'd connect them to a TV's "video in."
    2. Confirm the video sources are sending good signals. Attach them to the video/audio inputs on the back of the modulator.
    3. Connect the RF output of the modulator to one input of a Channel Vision combiner, and your existing cable/antenna line to the other.
    4. Connect the output of the combiner to your TV distribution network, and plug the modulator into a wall outlet.
    5. Turn on your TV, then press SELECT on the modulator to cycle through A, B, or C inputs.
    6. Hold SELECT for 2 seconds until the A/B/C light blinks to enter channel-change mode, then use UP/DOWN to set the channel for that input.
    7. Press SELECT again to exit channel-change mode (it also auto-exits after 5 seconds of inactivity). Repeat for other inputs.
    8. Leave at least one channel of separation between your selected channels to avoid interference (e.g. 32-34-36 is fine; 32-33-34 is not).

    A RF distribution amplifier on your cable/antenna signal is recommended so you can balance signal strength between that signal and the modulator's output — extreme differences in strength can cause interference.

    System Design Considerations

    • TVs are designed for signals around 10dBmV. Below 0dBmV produces weak/fuzzy/snowy pictures.
    • Above 10dBmV can overdrive older TVs without modern automatic gain control (which can otherwise handle up to 40dBmV). Use an inline attenuator to reduce excess signal.
    • Signal strength decreases with coax length and through connectors/splitters/combiners — plan your cable runs and compensate with amplifiers as needed.
    • In-line amps (powered through the coax) give modest gains; AC-powered amps offer more amplification, often with adjustable gain/tilt. Target 10dBmV at every TV (FCC max is 15.5dBmV).
    • Reverse isolation: place an amplifier between your antenna/cable input and the E Series combiner to prevent the modulator's signal from leaking back up the input line.
    • Cap all unused coax ports with terminators to prevent signal leakage.
    • Bandpass filters block unwanted frequencies — useful if a desired channel is already in use.
    • Taps redirect a portion of signal from a trunk line while passing the rest through (e.g., a 12dBmV tap passes 29dBmV of a 30dBmV trunk signal onward, sending 18dBmV to the branch line).
    • Demodulators condition a cable box's output signal so it can be reassigned to any channel (cable boxes usually restrict you to channel 3 or 4).

    Front Panel Adjustments

    • Stereo Loop: passes stereo audio to a TV on a non-stereo modulator. 75Ω is normal; use 1KΩ if using the stereo loop.
    • Video Level Adjustment: adjusts incoming video baseband level — use only to increase brightness/balance contrast between channels (spectrum analyzer recommended).
    • Channel Select: chooses input source (A, B, or C). Has a lockout feature — press and hold 2 seconds until the light blinks to enable channel up/down.
    • Channel Up/Down: changes the modulated channel.
    • DIP Switch Setting: selects TV frequency band — UHF (Antenna, 14-78) or Ultraband (Cable, 65-135). Always remove power before changing DIP switches.

    System Installation Checklist

    1. Aim for 10dB of signal strength at each TV (a bit more for big screens); never exceed 15.5dB (FCC limit).
    2. Expect ~5dB of signal loss per 100' of RG6 cable.
    3. Use broadband splitters (5MHz–1GHz) and amplifiers (40MHz–1GHz).
    4. Make sure all TVs are set to the correct frequency spectrum (UHF or cable).
    5. Verify the channels you plan to modulate on are clean "snow" with no interference.
    6. Use a low-pass filter on every installation to clean up frequencies (Model 3102 cleans channel 80 and above).
    7. Allow 1-2 channels of spacing between modulated and active channels.
    8. Always compensate for insertion loss from splitters/taps/combiners.
    9. Match signal strengths at the combiner to avoid beat frequencies degrading either signal.
    10. Use the lowest available frequencies for modulated channels — lower frequencies have less cable loss.
    11. When in doubt, run signal a bit high and use an attenuator to reduce it (attenuators can be combined, e.g. two -3dB = -6dB).
    12. Use well-shielded RG6, RG6 Quad, or RG11 coax for long feeder drops; RG59U only for composite/baseband video.
    13. Combine the modulator into the distribution system, and any amplification, as far "upstream" as possible.

    Troubleshooting Guide

    Symptom Likely Cause / Fix
    Stops modulating / no modulation Modulator needs ventilation. Unplug, let cool, reinstall in a well-ventilated area.
    Snowy picture, no modulation TV and modulator frequency bands don't match. Check DIP switch/jumper settings on the modulator and the TV's UHF/Cable band setting; verify wiring and splitter/amp 1GHz ratings.
    Black picture, no modulation TV and modulator are communicating but video isn't passing through. Check video source connections and power at the source; isolate the modulator to find where the signal is lost.
    Grainy local channels, good modulated picture Combiner insertion loss degrading local channels — use a CVT-15PIA amplifier or a 6dB tap as the combiner.
    Grainy modulated channel, good cable channels Use a low-pass filter to clean incoming frequencies, check signal loss through splitters/cable length, and amplify after the combiner if needed.
    TV won't tune high enough for modulated channel Use an external tuner (e.g. VCR or Channel Vision Model 1172 cable box tuner), or pick a lower channel within the TV's range.
    Cable box won't pass a modulated signal Use Model 3101 Cable Box Combiner Kit to route the modulated signal around the cable box.
    Cable company uses all available channels Use a low-pass filter (Model 3102) to block channels 80+ for clean modulation.

    Herringbone pattern on modulated channel Disconnect the modulator from local channels — if snowy, use a #3102-78 low-pass filter, and separate modulated channels by two channels.
    Horizontal/vertical bars rolling through picture Check for DC power leaking into the line and use a DC blocker, or a ground breaker for AC power on the line.
    Ghosts on the picture Terminate unused ports with a 75Ω terminator (Model 2101); check for a low-quality combiner (replace with a high-isolation HS model); check coax shielding quality.
    Low channels good, high channels grainy Add a tilt compensator after the amplifier and increase gain; verify all splitters/amps are broadband (5MHz–1GHz).
