Installation and operation manual for the Channel Vision AB-135 — a 1-source amplified keypad for A-BUS® systems, without IR control.

Overview

The AB-135 is an amplified keypad for Channel Vision's single-source CAT5 audio systems. It provides convenient volume control while its elegant decorator styling blends seamlessly with other wall switch devices.

Compatibility

The AB-135 adheres to the same protocols as Channel Vision's other CAT5 audio hubs to ensure maximum compatibility. Single-source CAT5 audio products from other manufacturers may not (and typically will not) use the same control codes for the AB-135 keypad. For IR control of source equipment, use the AB-134 keypad instead.

Basic Operation

The Pwr (power) button located at the lower left of the keypad turns the unit on or off — press and hold to turn the keypad off. After volume is changed, the LEDs stay lit for 5 seconds showing the current volume level. Volume adjustments are made using the up/down buttons on the right side of the keypad.

When using multiple AB-135 keypads in a system, pressing the PWR button turns off only that individual keypad — other keypads in the system continue to play independently.

Installation

• The AB-135 ships with a gasket that lets you adjust the height and fit of a decorator trim plate. Leave the gasket in place for a flush fit, or remove it to have the AB-135 stand above the plate.
• To simplify installation, the AB-135 uses an RJ-45 input and speaker-level output connectors.
• Connects to a Channel Vision P-1014 (or similar) CAT5 audio distribution hub.

Stripping and Connecting CAT5 Wire

1. Place the CAT5 cable between the blade and the first notch of a proper stripping tool such as Channel Vision's J-110 tool.
2. Rotate the tool only one turn — multiple turns could damage the inner wires.
3. Inspect the inner wires for damage. If any wires are cut, start over at step 1.

Adding More Power (with the A0240 and A0302)

The A0302 pairs with Channel Vision's A0240 amplifier via the Amp-Link connection, letting you interrupt the speaker-level audio from a low-power system and output 40 Watts per channel to the speakers — a way to add power to low-power distributed audio systems. Speaker-level audio from the AB-135 (in L/R mode via the A0302) is converted to line level to drive the A0240 amplifier, with amplified audio returned through the Amp-Link cable to power a second set of speakers.

Connection Tips & Troubleshooting

• Verify the CAT5 cable is wired correctly at both ends per the TIA-568A standard — miswiring can cause distorted sound, prevent the system from functioning, or damage components.
• Verify speakers are connected in phase per the product label — out-of-phase speakers rob the system of bass, especially with dual-voice-coil speakers.
• If no audio is heard, confirm the audio source is playing, then press the power button on the AB-135 to make sure it's turned on. Check power supply and voltage — each A-BUS hub is powered by 24VDC (solid brown wire is +, striped brown wire is -). If proper voltage isn't fed to each amplified keypad, the system won't function normally.
• Observe wiring distance specifications — max recommended wire length between the audio hub output and the AB-135 is 150 feet. Greater distances can cause erratic performance due to CAT5 power loss; locally powering the keypad may be an option.

Warranty

Channel Vision Technology repairs or replaces any defect in material or workmanship occurring during normal use, with new or rebuilt parts, free of charge in the USA, for one year from the date of original purchase, when purchased through an authorized reseller. No mail-in warranty card is needed. This warranty does not cover shipment damage, failures caused by other manufacturers' products, or failures due to accident, misuse, abuse, acts of God, or alteration.
