  • ABB Keypad KP-4.1 (free@home) — Installation and Operation Instructions

    September 08, 2026 3 min read

Wiring, setup, and factory reset instructions for the ABB KP-4.1 wireless 4-button scene keypad (free@home).

    Full text manual (for reference)

Installation and operation instructions for the ABB Keypad KP-4.1 (free@home®) — a wireless 4-button scene/function keypad that mounts in a standard wall box.

    Intended Use

The ABB KP-4.1 Keypad manually commands up to 4 specific functions or user-created scenes with its 4-button keypad. No electrical loads are wired directly to the device — instead, it communicates wirelessly over the ABB-free@home network to control other connected devices.

    Safety Warnings

    • Installation must be performed by a licensed electrician or electrical professional. Improper installation can cause property damage, personal injury, or loss of life.
    • Fire risk: Use only in a certified wall box (Carlon® products recommended). Do not connect equipment not intended to be controlled by this device.
    • Damaged device: If the device body or wiring insulation shows any damage, immediately turn off power at the breaker/fuse and replace the device — do not attempt repair.
    • Shock hazard: Turn off power at the breaker before installing.

    Wire color Function
    Black Hot/Live (120 VAC)
    White Neutral
    Green Ground

    Installation Steps

    1. Turn off power at the circuit breaker before installing.
    2. Remove the old wall plate and old switch from the wall box.
    3. Disconnect all three wires from the old switch.
    4. Connect the ABB Keypad per the wiring table above.
    5. Mount the Keypad using a screwdriver and the provided screws.
    6. Replace the wall plate.
    7. Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker.

Replacing the 4-Button Keypad and Bezel

The keypad and bezel can be swapped without rewiring. Turn the power OFF before removing the adapter bezel with a screwdriver, then turn power back ON after reassembling the new keypad and bezel.

    Setup / Network Pairing

    1. The Keypad must be configured to work with other devices on the free@home network — you'll need the ABB-free@home System Access Point (SysAP) and a computer, tablet, or phone.
    2. Walls, ceilings, and metal objects (especially steel reinforcement) can affect wireless communication. Keep the device at least 3 feet from high-frequency electronics (computers, routers, audio/video systems).
    3. On first power-up, the device enters discovery mode for 30 minutes, during which it can be added to the free@home network via the SysAP login.
    4. After 30 minutes, discovery mode exits automatically. To re-enter, cycle power OFF then ON.
    5. Once added to a network, the device won't re-enter discovery mode on power-up. To join a new network, first reset the device to factory settings.

    Factory Reset Procedure

    1. Press and hold the bottom of the rocker for at least 25 seconds.
    2. The bottom LED starts flashing after ~10 seconds.
    3. After another ~10 seconds the LED flashes rapidly; after another ~5 seconds it turns off.
    4. Release the bottom of the keypad within the next 10 seconds.
    5. Press the bottom of the keypad again — the lower LED stays on. Press once more within 5 seconds.
    6. The device returns to factory settings and restarts.

    Technical Data

Operating voltage 120 VAC, 60 Hz
Connection Hot and Neutral wires required
Wireless protocol free@home, 2.400-2.483 GHz, Meshed
    Ambient operating temperature 23°F to 113°F (-5°C to 45°C)

    Grounding & Code Compliance

Install according to national and local electrical codes. If there's no ground connector in the wall box, the National Electrical Code (NEC®) allows this control to be installed as a replacement ONLY IF: (1) a non-metal, non-burning faceplate is attached with non-metal screws, OR (2) the circuit is protected by a GFCI. When installing, cap or remove the green ground wire before screwing the control into the wall box (per those exceptions).

    Cleaning

Wipe with a clean, damp cloth. Do NOT use chemical cleaning solutions.
