Home automation technology has changed the way lights are being used at home and with the use of a good lighting control system you’ll be able to manage your lights in ways that will make life at home easier, more secure, and a lot more enjoyable. Smart lighting can be integrated into homes and controlled in a variety of different ways, primarily with the creation of lighting scenes. For those who are unfamiliar with the concept of scenes, think of scenes as automatic tasks that your smart home system performs. These automatic tasks, or scenes, are created by you with the use of a home controller. So basically, you can create lighting scenes to follow recurring schedules that will automatically turn on or off certain lights of your home. Besides having scenes automatically turn on by your home automation system, you can also activate them with devices that are compatible with your home controller such as wall-mounted touchscreens, smartphones, tablets, handheld remotes or smart switches.

Not all lighting scenes will be the same since each household is different, but there are some scenes that are commonly used in most home automation systems.

Most Commonly Used Lighting Scenes

Night Scene

A night scene can be created to turn most of the interior lights off at bedtime while leaving other lights on. The lights that are left on can be dimmed down so they can act as night lights. At the same time, another night scene can have the outdoor lights automatically turn on at dusk. Luckily, most controllers have an astronomical clock built in to know when the sun is setting based on the location, a feature that will definitely come in handy when creating this type of scene. This is also a great scene to utilize for an extra layer of home security to deter unwanted intruders from entering your property at night.

Morning Scene

A great way to wake up peacefully is to create a morning scene that consists of having the bedroom lights slowly dim on as the sun rises. This way you and your loved ones don’t have to wake up to lights that turn on at full brightness. The morning scene can also incorporate the bathroom and kitchen lights, making it easier to get ready in morning and prepare breakfast. And, combined with other smart devices, the morning scene can automatically turn on your television set to your favorite local news channel.

Party Scene

A party scene can light your house at the right illumination to create the perfect mood for great conversation and it could light the countertops or areas of your home where drinks and snacks are located. The party scene can also incorporate your home’s audio system to play your favorite music at the right levels to enhance the ambiance.

Vacation Scene

A vacation scene can be created for when you’re away from home for long periods of time to mimic your daily lighting behaviors. Have your outdoor and indoor lights turn on at dusk and turn off in the morning. This will give the appearance that someone is home when you’re away, which will also add an extra layer of home security to keep burglars from breaking in.

Coming Home Scene

Coming home from work knowing that the lights will be on is a great way to feel more secure, especially if you get off work late at night. You won’t have to worry about pulling up to your driveway or walking up to your front door in the dark. The coming home scene can include the outdoor lights, porch light, and various interior lights such as the lights in your hallway, living room, and kitchen.

Lighting scenes can be created to serve many different purposes at home. Just remember, you can always play around and test which lighting scenes work best for you and your family. That’s one of the great things about having a smart home – you can always make changes to them to help simplify and enhance your life.
