Protect your home or small business from external sources of high voltage spikes with the Leviton Type 1 Secondary Surge Arrester. This Type 1 device protects against lightning strikes entering into main service panels or electrical equipment with high exposure to lighting, such as farming irrigation systems and pumps used in oil/petrochemical applications. The surge arrester features rugged housing constructed of high-impact, non-conductive fiberglass-reinforced polycarbonate rated for outdoor use.

This surge arrester’s use of a single, large 40mm MOV per line (each phase-to-neutral) provides a higher energy capacity than multiple small MOV configurations where the protection is only as good as the weakest MOV in the chain.

Type 1 surge arresters are typically mounted on the line side of the main service entrance to protect against external surges caused by lightning or utility capacitor bank switching. The arrester is connected between each of the two incoming Lines and Neutral.

What is a Transient Voltage Surge?

Transient voltage surges are short-term deviations from a desired voltage level or signal that can occur at any time. Such changes can result in an electronic device malfunction, or cause extensive damage. Also termed "spikes", these occurrences take place as a result of magnetic field/inductive coupling or whenever the line current is interrupted. They can originate from either inside a facility, or derive from outside utility lines. Sources within a facility involve loads that are switched, such as electric motors that are turned ON and OFF and are addressed by devices applied at point-of-use equipment.
