HomeProject IdeasFront Door Intercom to Ring Your Telephones

SPEAK TO A PERSON AT YOUR DOOR THROUGH YOUR TELEPHONE

Front Door Intercom to Ring Your Telephones
This project will allow you to speak to a person at your door through the existing telephones in your home. A telephone entry controller board is wired in series with the phone service from your telephone service provider before the phone service is distributed through your home. An elegantly styled door intercom station is installed near your front door and wired back the telephone entry controller. When the doorbell button is pressed on the door intercom station, the phones in your home will ring. If you answer the phone within 20 seconds, you will be automatically connected to the front door intercom.

    HOW TO INSTALL IT:

    1. Locate an appropriate mounting location for the door intercom station near the front door. If it is difficult to add new wires back to the telephone entry controller, you can use two wires that are used for a traditional doorbell chime. However, if you do this you will need to disconnect those wires from the doorbell transformer and re-route them to the telephone entry controller (model CVTE110).
    2. You will need to install a single-gang junction box for the door intercom station. A pre-construction junction box is supplied with the unit. For retro-fit applications, you may choose to use a different box.
    3. Connect the single pair of wires at the door station to the door station screw terminals labeled “To SYS”.
    4. Find a suitable place to mount the enclosure provided for the telephone entry controller. Choose a location that will allow you to run wires to and from your telephone distribution wiring system. The location should also allow easy access to the wires coming from the door intercom station. Often, the garage is a good location to mount the telephone entry controller.
    5. Mount the enclosure for the telephone entry controller.
    6. Connect the other end of the door station wires to the telephone entry controller to the screw terminals labeled “INTERCOM”.
    7. On the telephone entry controller, connect the telephone line from the service provider to the screw terminals labeled “LINE”. Note: the telephone service must be wired through the telephone entry controller before it is distributed to all the phones in the house.
    8. On the telephone entry controller, connect the screw terminals labeled “TEL” to the phone distribution wiring of your house.
    9. Connect the provided power supply to the terminals labeled “POWER” on the telephone entry controller. Now plug the power supply into a 110VAC wall outlet.
    10. For wiring diagrams and configuration options, please review the product manual.

    SUMMARY

When the doorbell button on the door intercom station is pressed, your phones will ring. Simply pick up the phone and you will be connected. If the doorbell button has not been pressed and your phones are not ringing, you can pick up the phone and dial ** to be connected to the door intercom station. When you’re finished speaking, simply hang up the phone.
