BLINK LIGHTS TO MONITOR TEMPERATURE IN CRITICAL AREAS
|
Visual Alarm Notification of Low or High Temperature
This project will blink lights when temperatures need to be monitored in areas such as wine cellars, basements, attics, etc. It can also be used with walk-in freezers and other similar storage facilities for notification when high or low temperature limits are reached in those critical areas.
The Winland Temp-Alert sensor measures temperatures from -30deg to +130deg F. Simply select an acceptable temperature range by setting the adjustable high and low limit arms. If the temperature in the monitored area rises above or falls below the preset limits, the temperature indicator will contact one of the preset limit arms. This completes the circuit and provides you with a dry contact alarm signal. This alarm signal is then used to trigger a Simply Automated (SAI) I/O Input/Output module which sends a UPB (Universal Powerline Bus) signal to blink light switches associated with the monitored spaces.
The SAI Transceiver Switches will replace existing switches for lights to be used as Visual Alarm notifiers.

HOW TO INSTALL IT:
Temp – Alert Installation
- The Temp-Alert comes with simple-to-follow installation instructions. The unit can be mounted on a wall preferably near a thermostat. Make sure it is well clear of windows and heat sources. Using the attached template, mark the screw holes on the vertical surface you wish to mount the Temp-Alert. Drive the screws in your mounting surface (use the anchors supplied as necessary) allowing 3/16” between the screw head and mounting surface. Engage key slots on the back of the Temp-Alert case with the screw heads and press down.
- Connect the Temp-Alert to pins 9/10 or pins 15/16 of the I/O Module by attaching the 22 AWG single pair cable from the front mounted terminals of the Temp-Alert.
- Temperature limits are set by an adjustment screw. To set the limit arm, simply loosen (slightly) the appropriate locknut with an 11/32” wrench. Use a screwdriver to set the desired temperature limit. Make sure you retighten the locknut when you have the desired limit. The Temp-Alert will not function properly if the locknut is not retightened. (Avoid over-tightening of the locknut)
SAI I/O Module Installation
- Plug-in the I/O module to a 110VAC outlet.
- Program the module in UPStart software as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Create a link to control the light switches associated with the monitored space. Program the trigger link as a blink command.
SAI Transceiver Switch Installation
- Shut off the circuit breaker that powers the switch that will be replaced.
- Replace the appropriate switch with the SAI Transceiver switch. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for installation details.
- Power up the circuit breaker and test the Transceiver Switch manually for correct operation.
- Program via UPStart to respond to the link sent by the I/O module.
SUMMARY
The Temp-Alert and Simply Automated modules, when used together, allow visual alarm notification to anyone needing to monitor temperatures in critical areas. The Temp-Alert is a flexible and dependable backup warning device of thermostatic controls. The SAI module’s ability to send signals through the powerline makes the project easy to deploy (no new wires).
