CONTROL THE TEMPERATURE OF YOUR HOME BY TELEPHONE

Remote Temperature Sensing and Control by Telephone
This project will allow you to monitor and maintain a desired temperature in a cabin or home while it is unoccupied, and allows the ability to force the temperature to increase or decrease in anticipation of occupying that cabin or home. Through the use of the telephone, a caller can obtain the temperature where the specified hardware is located, and vary the temperature between two set points by controlling a thermostat. In the case of a winter cabin, the user can pre-warm the cabin hours in advance of the arrival time.

    MORE EQUIPMENT INFORMATION:
The Sensaphone Cottage Sitter is a monitoring system that can be accessed by telephone. The system is capable of monitoring external dry contact sensor inputs from devices such as door/window contacts, motion sensors, and leak detectors. The Cottage Sitter also has a built-in temperature sensor.

In addition, the Cottage Sitter contains an on-board relay which can be controlled through the telephone keypad. This relay, when integrated with a thermostat, allows the temperature to be controlled, or switched, between two predetermined set points.

When a user calls the Cottage Sitter on the phone, the system recites the status of the sensor inputs, the relay condition, and the temperature.

An additional feature of the Cottage Sitter is the ability to dial-out to pre-programmed telephone numbers and play back a recorded message based upon sensor input and/or temperature.

The thermostat used with the Cottage Sitter is configured in advance to operate between two set temperature points. There is a DAY set point and a NIGHT set point. Application of 12 volts DC to the thermostat forces the thermostat to operate at the NIGHT set point. For this application, the DAY setting is used when the residence in unoccupied, and the NIGHT setting for when it is occupied.

    HOW TO INSTALL IT:

    Sensaphone Cottage Sitter Installation

    1. The Cottage Sitter comes with simple-to-follow installation and programming instructions. The unit can be mounted on a wall or left on top of a desk.
    2. Connect the AC power transformer to an electrical outlet.
    3. Install 6 D-cell batteries for back-up power.
    4. Connect the supplied modular phone cable between the Cottage Sitter and a phone outlet.
    5. Reference the installation and programming instructions for basic operation.

    OMNIStat Thermostat Installation

    1. Install the OMNIStat thermostat as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
    2. Connect the wires from the HVAC system to the thermostat as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
    3. Using the supplied thermostat communications cable and the 22-4 AWG hook-up wire, connect and extend the BLACK (GND) and GREEN (+12 VDC) wires to a location near the Cottage Sitter.
    4. Follow the thermostat’s installation and operating instructions and configure the following:

      Communications Mode – 24
      Mode – Heat
Day – Set to desired unoccupied temperature, for example, 52 degrees F.
Night – Set to occupied temperature, 70 degrees F.

    VDC Power Supply Installation

    1. Cut the multi-connector plug from the power supply.
    2. Plug in the power supply, and with a voltmeter, identify the “+” and “-“ leads.
    3. Unplug the power supply.

    Interconnections

    1. Connect the “+” lead from the power supply to the “C” terminal of the Cottage Sitter.
    2. Connect the GREEN wire from the thermostat to the “ON” terminal of the Cottage Sitter.
    3. Connect the BLACK wire from the thermostat to the “-“ lead of the power supply.
    4. Plug in the power supply

    Relay Activation

    1. Call the Cottage Sitter on the telephone.
    2. At anytime during the recitation of the status report, press any key on the telephone to generate a touch-tone.
    3. The unit responds with “OK.”
    4. Press #, then 6, on the phone to turn on the relay.
    5. The unit responds with ”ON.”
    6. Press the #, then 3, on the phone to turn off the relay.
    7. The unit responds with ”OFF.”
    8. Press the #, then 2, on the phone to recite the status.

    SUMMARY

The Sensaphone Cottage Sitter and HAI OMNIStat thermostat when used together allows for the monitoring and control of the temperature at a remote location. The Cottage Sitter can be called and it will recite the status and temperature at the remote location. If the temperature needs to be changed, telephone keypad activation of the on-board relay will change the setting of the connected thermostat.

In the example of the winter cabin, the DAY/unoccupied setting is 52 degrees. If the temperature falls below 52 degrees, the heat will kick on and maintain the DAY setting of 52 degrees. The Cottage Sitter, when called, will recite the status and temperature of the cabin through the use of the built-in temperature sensor. If the user wants to arrive to a warm cabin for the weekend, the user turns on the relay, which forces the temperature to the NIGHT/occupied setting of 70 degrees. Calling the Cottage Sitter periodically after relay activation will confirm that the temperature has now increased in the cabin.
